This was very helpful guide in preparing for a 10-day rafting trip. She provides a thorough list of gear and what to expect rafting. Not all of it applied or was needed for my trip in August but her book still had good suggestions that you can't find online - buying a camp towel if you weren't familiar with those, or a tent fan was actually nice for hot nights. Most of her suggestions were for cold weather rafting that for summer, I would recommend wearing a long sleeve cotton shirt over top a quick dry shirt. I would recommend checking out the book if you are rafting the Colorado River for the first time. That way you can jots down notes when you return on what worked and what stuff wasn't needed for the next time.

Hidden male depression is the focus of this clear, compelling book by a Massachusetts family psychotherapist who specializes in working with dysfunctional men. Because our culture socializes boys to mask feelings of vulnerability, he says, they bury deep within themselves damaging childhood trauma and its ensuing depressive effects when they become men. This strongly reasoned study starts out with an illustration of the "toxic legacy" that is passed, often for generations, from father to son, with each chapter adding another piece to the complex face. In terms of understanding covert depression, Terry is spot on. For any men raised in a difficult home this book is a treasure map for finding the reward of healing. Terry is a tad political and ventures down some paths, a little too far, to make a point but his insight and diagnosis are on point.If western medicine is on top of the male depression issue than why do men exceed women in suicide nearly 4 to 1? Why are there so many psychotic meds available from your doctor? I'd suggest there are many misdiagnosed men who need to address prior trauma and don't have a clue about it.I've suggested this book to many men and especially any counselor or pastor who works with men.

I am currently reading this book and I wish I had read it years ago. This is a MUST READ for men or women that are married to men that they suspect might have struggles with depression, anger, addiction etc. This is a life changer for me. If you really love someone, you help them face their issues; you don't enable. If you are even considering this book, you probably really need it. I wish I had heard of it years earlier.

Terry Real’s book, I Don't Want to Talk About It, has been around since 1998. I just discovered it after using his book, The New Rules of Marriage, for couples as bibliotherapy, but that’s another story and excellent book.Terry takes a Trauma Informed look at men and their childhood development. He concludes that men are denied their mother’s support at a critical time in their development: when they are taught to “be a man” by their fathers and the surrounding culture. Their transition from attachment to independence and emotional competence is never resolved.Boys are admonished by the culture that “men don’t cry,” “your mom will turn you into a sissy boy,” or worse, they are admonished by their peers for being “gay” or a “girly boy” when showing feelings.His thesis is that men are left susceptible to depression that is often suppressed into a covert form. One of the few feelings allowed readily expressed by men is anger. Anger, driven by deprivation maternal attachment into depression, explodes outward into rage, often directed at women.Terry is a great writer and believes passionately in his Emotional Focused Therapy like approach to helping men.And the book works as bibliotherapy, to tease out those suppressed emotions from men in therapy. Men can readily identify with Terry’s personal story and approach.

I've read them all, and this book is hands-down the best guide about depression in men I've found...and I don't expect to find a better book on this subject, I've stopped looking. This book's author KNOWS the special shame that comes with being a depressed man.Spoiler alert: this book will make you look at yourself to examine the causes of your depression and ways to get out of it, but not a single step of this journey is easy or a miracle. Once you open this book, you will realize you aren't suffering alone. Finally, this book tackles unhealthy male stereotypes and tendencies that get us into trouble, sickness, or into an early grave.DON'T LET DEPRESSION SHAME YOU OUT OF LIVING A FULL, HAPPY LIFE. YOU DESERVE IT!

This book broke me open. Looking back on how covert depression may have been at the root of all the best and worst things I've done in my life, at the expense of relationship throughout all of it. It's going to take some time to get new bearings after this.

This is a very good book if you wish to understand your male depression and the things you do to deal with it. It has answered many questions for me and shed new light on why I feel the way I do and do the things I do. Although it is written specifically for men (according to the author, more men are prone to depression as adults because men inevitably encounter major trauma during childhood which they do not deal with because they are taught not to talk about it, not to cry, and to be "strong.") But, this book can be applied to anyone who has not dealt with childhood trauma for whatever reason...male or female. I recommend this book for woman, because it will help you to understand your husband or boyfriend and actually be able to help him understand himself and recover. Who knows...it may also help you to understand yourself.

This book is a diamond. In the many years I've recommended it to clients every one has said it's the best book they've read about male depression and the expression of anger. One father, after reading it, realized his own mistakes in parenting and bought a copy for his son. Terry Real is honest, straightforward and clear in his delivery of the challenges men have with imposed cultural images. He provides insight into the suppression of male emotions and the devastating impact "manliness" messages. You don't teach boys to be men - they already are...you teach males to be real with living. Read this book!

The husband and wife team Nancy and Randall Faber are internationally known as authors of the Piano Adventures teaching method and over two hundred publications for the piano. They recently founded the Faber Piano Institute in Ann Arbor, MI, where they live with their daughter Vivian. Nancy Faber, who was named "Distinguished Composer of the Year" by the Music Teachers National Association, enjoys a busy schedule of commissions for the concert stage in addition to her educational composing. Recent commissions include "The Snow Queen" for narrator and orchestra, "The Picture My Imagination Has Painted" for Flute Quartet and Piano, and "Trio for Flute, Saxophone and Piano". Her pieces have been heard on U.S. public radio and network television. She studied composition with Joan Tower, William Albright, and British composer Nicholas Maw; piano studies were at the Eastman School and Michigan State University. Randall Faber has toured Korea, Taiwan, Canada and the United Kingdom. He was master teacher for both the World Conference on Piano Pedagogy and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. He gave recitals in St. Louis, Ann Arbor, as Convention Artist for the North Dakota Music Teachers, and performed as Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan, University of Southern Mississippi, Saginaw State University, and numerous universities throughout South Korea. Its a piano book for my daughter to use in class. What else is there to say. No problems at all.

I love the pieces in this book. Initially I couldn't find this book at the store so I got the 2B - Popular Repertoire, but it is a higher level compared to the Performance Book, and so was too challenging. I'm glad I found the Performance Book online. It is a bit easier, and I love its selection of music pieces.

My son and I love this book. I am a piano teacher and love using Faber and Alfred to train my students. Brings some wonderful balance to their technique training!

Very good as others have mentioned. But I wanted to point out one drawback that I have noticed now that I am using the book more in prep for a Brazil trip. The number of plumages represented for several species are unhelpfully limited, and in several cases, distinct plumages are represented only by an illustration of the head. In particular, juvenile plumages of passerines are almost never illustrated, and in many cases of distinct male and female plumages are only represented by an illustration of one sex. (This is partly a consequence of the passerine illustrations being taken from "Field Guide to the Songbirds of South America" by Ridgely & Tudor, which has similarly limited illustrations).An example is the masked and black-tailed tityras on page 245. Only the male masked is illustrated, and only the female black-tailed is illustrated. This leaves the birder to trying to ID these similar looking birds by reading the text description--not good! (I noticed the Atlantic Forest guide, the second in the series, at least adds a head illustration of the male Black-tailed, but that doesn't help you if all you have is this book.) Another example on the same page is Pink-throated Becard--only illustrated by the head of the male. One really needs to see the whole bird as well as the far different female plumage.I hope these deficiencies can be remedied in a second edition. They were likely compromises that helped make the book possible. Of course, it is far better to have this guide than no Pantanal guide at all. But serious birders may want to have a supplement, such as the Van Perlo Brazil guide which at least illustrates more male and female plumages.

I used this book in Rio, Iguassu Falls and in the Pantanal. Although it is written for the Pantanal and Cerrado of Central Brazil, it includes birds found in other regions and was fine for Rio and Iguassu. The book is inclusive for the Pantanal area (740 species) but not too cumbersome to carry while birding.I had considered buying a guide with all the birds of Brazil, but it would be too heavy to carry. The book I had considered was A Field Guide to the Birds of Brazil. However, the illustrations were so small and unclear that it would not have been worth the weight. Certainly this Wildlife Conservation Society guide is far superior in quality.This book is new enough (2010) to cover most of the latest changes in taxonomy. Most importantly, the drawings and descriptions are clear enough to allow identification of birds and enable you to distinguish between similar species and subspecies. The drawings also include birds on the fly, as well as male, female and immature.The drawings include Portuguese as well as English names, with the scientific name in the species description. Essential, in my view, is having the description next to the drawing of the bird. The descriptions contain appearance, habitat, behavior, and vocalizations.Each bird description contains a range map showing range of bird breeding, boreal migrant, austral migrant, vagrant occurrence and isolated area of distribution. Tiny flags and half flags show endemic and near endemic species. Status as critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable is also indicated.Note: I came across a sentence in the description of the American Pygmy Kingfisher that nobody could understand: "American Pygmy is found singly and generally perches close to the surface of shallow water, and sometimes even feeds at stagnant pools; it can be confiding." p.158. Confiding???Also, a sentence on page xii of the introduction seems odd and unnecessary: "Brazilians speak Portuguese, and are helpful, friendly, and full of fun." The Portuguese part is fine, but the remainder of the sentence seems a bit strange, to me.To date, the "Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil: The Pantanal and Cerrado" appears to be the best field guide to buy for touring that area, as well as neighboring regions. It worked for me.

This is an excellent new bird guide for a world-class region known as the Pantanal and Cerrado in interior Brazil. The authors are two of the most knowledgeable experts on the area there are -- John A. Gwynne and Robert S. Ridgely. Their text is perfect. Succinct but in conversational sentence structure form. It cover appearance and identification points, viewing suggestions, voice, habits and its frequency. Indigenous birds are marked with tiny Brazilian flags and threatened birds are marked with the category of risk. The maps are good, too.The plates are virtually all first-rate. The passerines (perching birds) are the work, borrowed from excellent past volumes of his, of the fabulous Guy Tudor -- one of the best bird guide artists there is. The others, while done by various artists, are very well done, too.In summation, this is an excellent guide for an exceptional region (World Heritage Class) that is extremely well done, and can be fitted in a largish pocket for bush viewing and solidly bound for some rough use. Amazon is offering it at a bargain price. If great bird guides interest you, don't pass up this beauty!

We just returned from a trip to the Brazilian Pantanal and this book had what we needed every single time! That's saying something considering how many birds we saw.We had no problem locating anything we were looking for and appreciated the fact that the Portuguese names were also provided as this helped us and our guide communicate well.Speaking of our guide: he also used this book (albeit a Portuguese version) and so, too, did just about every guide we saw down there.
