Would have rated better if the beginning chapters weren't so confusing! Still not sure what some chapters related to. The author might have stuck to the Bridget/Ivy theme to make it clearer. The extra info re: other unwed mothers at the end gave the story added dimension though not clarification. Enjoyed the ending.

What do Kirkus, NYT, Christian Science Monitor, and I have in common? We all agree that Jennifer Gilmore’s new book, If Only, is not to be missed. It’s for readers of any age, drawing our attention to choices we make in life that bring us closer in touch with ourselves and to the essence of loving relationships we all seek. The author excels in her craft with delicate character descriptions and elegant writing in general. This book wins hands down. I give it a 5!

Deftly weaves past, present, and possible horizons into a breathtaking whole, while convincingly inhabiting the emotional and verbal cadences of a sixteen-year-old girl faced with pregnancy, as well as those of the daughter who will seek her out sixteen years later... Even the simplest phrases here resonate with dizzying depth if read carefully. "My bones ached to leave." I ended this book near tears of gratitude for the If Onlys that shape us all.

I was surprised that I rather enjoyed this book.

Crazy writing . I hope most teens aren’t this frivolous or can’t carry on a normal conversation. It took all I had to finish this book hoping it would get better. There were good questions on what an adopted child would wonder, and how a birth mother feels. But most of the conversations were just rediculus.

I bought this book with high hopes after reading reviews. My almost 5 year old refused to poop on the potty. She would only go in a pull up and after following suggestion after suggestion with no luck I was getting extremely discouraged. That's when I heard of this book and decided to purchase it.It started off ok. It went through explanations on what causes withholding in young children and the psychology behind it, and how to make your child get over their pooping fear. Sounds good, right? Where it completely lost me is when the author gives advice on how to get your child to be more compliant. He says to lock them in a room by themself until they are calm and willing to listen to your demands!! What!?! I follow the peaceful parent philosophy and while I am far from perfect at it, this advice is extreme and harmful. The author lost all credibility after reading that poor advice. I won't even get into his pushing of using repeated enemas on your young child. The reason I give this book a 2 and not a 1 is that reading it did give us the push to get our child fully trained. We did it by letting her where pullups while sitting on the toilet and having a jelly bean reward system (2 beans for trying on the toilet with pullup, 3 for trying without, and 5 for succeeding). After sticking with that for about a month, she is fully trained and we can finally kiss those pull ups goodbye!Bottom line is, book has some bad advice, some of which can be damaging, but managed to give us the push we needed to get her trained. Not worth the money.

I have a MUCH older child - one that happens to be on the spectrum - who is non-verbal and not always compliant. Although some parts in this book are ideas/processes that will not work for my son - it gave me insight on things I may not have considered previously. In reading this book - I knew that my son was more than likely "withholding" - but I did not realize some of the other characteristics, like being lethargic or mood swings could also be contributing to his behaviors and changes. With him non-verbal and unable to express how he is feeling - it's a guessing game. My son does not have the "fear" of the toilet bowl itself - but he does have insanely LARGE BM's that I think "how the heck did he even pass a thing of that size" - so the pain issue of his BM is def a concern and why he would withhold it. Yes, the book repeats itself (but that is how we learn and understand, but repetition so we understand the terminology and so forth)... Again, I can not use EVERYTHING in this book, but I can learn and alter some parts to help with my son. It is also a VERY quick read - I completed it in under 2 hours.

Such a helpful book, I wish I had found it sooner! My daughter had been withholding poop for 2 years her pediatrician was never any help just kept telling me "she'll poop, give her time." That is unacceptable advice when you're 2 old is crying and screaming for a week at a time because she has to poop but is too scared to do it. I tried google and couldn't find helpful information. I read this book and the term functional constipation eas used, suddenly I had a plethora of information from google once I had the correct terminology.Anyway 9 months later we followed the advice on the book and my daughter is no pooping without holding it, she's not crying about it for days. I'm now weaning her from the medicine to see of it is still needed. If you are having poop problems read this book!

This is the second time I’ve purchased this book -- we apparently seem to produce children who have trouble with constipation! :) I really feel like it should be required reading for pediatricians – it describes the problem so clearly and offers many other solutions beyond just adding more fiber and laxatives. As a working mom who has little time to spend reading, the thing I love most is that this book is short, concise and straightforward. It gets right to the problem and solutions using language that I (and my kids) actually understand. Dr. Tom has clearly worked with a LOT of kids with different constipation issues and while not every story or recommendation was applicable to my kids, there are enough different ideas that I could tailor them my children’s issues. For example, our now 8-yr old daughter had trouble with constipation that started at age 3 – HUGE, painful poops and going poop in her pants/skid marks. Our pediatrician kept recommending more fiber and liquid. But this didn’t work because she was withholding (I learned this in the book, not from the pediatrician). We adapted the incentive ideas and charts in the book and that worked well for her. Gave the book away a couple years ago to a friend with similar problems. Our second daughter is 4.5 years old and was recently constantly complaining about tummy aches and wouldn’t poop for multiple days in a row (but not soiling her pants). I have been resistant to using laxatives but I feel better about it after rereading the book and especially after discovering the dosage discussion in Chapter 20 (Ch 20 is written for Healthcare Providers but I think it’s one of the most useful chapters in the book). So far so good: no more tummy aches and pooping almost every day. This book isn’t going to instantly cure your kid (sorry!) but it’s a POSITIVE book that offers helpful education and actionable advice.(Other notes: our kids love Softy the Poop -- also a book by Dr. Tom but for kids! Dr. Tom also has a website which I’ve found useful – I haven’t done it but you can request a phone call with him on the site.)

Compared to other Learning Library books (Inside your Outside, Oh Say Can you Seed) this more resembled the Cat in the Hat reading books (Green Eggs and Ham, There's a Wocket in my Pocket) in my opinion. My kids enjoyed having it read to them, but weren't as enamored by the "education" as with the previous Learning Library books I mentioned. To me it didn't seem very educational.

I love the Cat In The Hat books & so does my daughter. This is a great way to make reading fun! I have bought several of these books from Amazon and will surely order more. I would highly recrecommend these books as a wonderful gift for a child of any age.

Cute, educational, and sends the right message! Paired with the book about our bodies and how they work it is a perfect lesson that is very entertaining!

Well written! Dr Seuss lives on in the hearts of our modern youth. Great way to teach kids how to eat healthy and exercise without them knowing it

Bought this to read to a grade school class to teach them about health. It is a fun story with solid health and wellness information.

Fun book! I am a school nurse read this book to kindergarten class and acted it out with props. The children loved it

My granddaughter loves it! What more can one ask for?!

Excellent book for introducing health to elementary school aged children. There are lots of free online lessons that go along with the book as well!

The book is well written, one might say it reads itself. Moreover, after several months since I read the book, I can safely say it changed my mindset. I have changed the view of my peers, my superiors and myself. I have changed my approach to several aspects of my life (study, work, sports,...). I really love the fact, that author took care with providing lots of references to his claims.I would further recommend the second book by Mathew Syed Black box thinking. The overlap is very subtle, which is rare in the self-development literature (it's often pointless to read several books by the same author). In summary, it's fun and full of useful information.

It's hard to resist comparing this book to Malcolm Gladwell's The Outliers. In The Outliers Gladwell helped spread the fame of the work of Anders Ericsson, FSU expert on how people acquire expert intelligence. Indeed, the phrase "10,000 hours" is now so ubiquitous it has become a cliche, although people often forget that it refers not just to practice but to STRUCTURED practice. While The Outliers excels in its writing and infotainment value, Bounce seems more instructive. It's hard to finish Bounce and not feel like there is a lot more you could do if you just applied yourself. Syed mixes personal experience, anecdotes of others, and empirical data to hammer home the point that living with a "growth" mindset is richly rewarding.Syed does an excellent job of explaining how some people continue to reach new thresholds in their pursuits while many others plateau early. I often give this book as a gift to nieces, nephews, and friends' children who are entering college, telling them I wish I could have read (and believed) this book when I was their age.

I read a lot, a lot, and this is one of the most significant books I have read. Anyone striving for high performance, in any field, as well as anyone raising or teaching children should read this book. I've been very interested in reading one of the books which are based, at least to a degree, on the work of Anders Ericsson and purposeful practise being more important than talent you are born with. Reviews of the other books, such as Talent Is Overrated by Geoff Colvin, The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell have put me off. Each book seems to take a somewhat different view of the importance of various aspects that have been shown to lead to superior performance -- purposeful practice and opportunity (such as having a good coach available) being the primary aspects. Bounce also delves deep into the psychology of people who persist enough to become superior performers. There are many psychological points, which anyone can develop, which lead to someone bouncing back from difficulty and doing well. With practise being so important to superior performance, you must have persistance or you won't get in the practice.Highly recommended. I've already given it as a gift and will be giving out more.

The talent myth pervades our thinking in various forms, e.g., musicians, leaders, etc. are "born--not made." While one should acknowledge the existence of those rare individuals will seemingly superhuman aptitudes, according to the author, most "experts" in whatever field reach the pinnacle through a combination of factors--factors within the reach of mere mortals! This is good news and awfully encouraging to anyone willing to obtain the proper tutelage and engage in "purposeful practice" over the long haul. This book lit a fire under me to develop a plan and "do the time" in purposeful practice in order to master the guitar. Woodshed, here I come!

Shares many of the same themes and material that Geoff Colvin presented in Talent is Overrated. I believe the author writes from a personal perspective having competed at table tennis. I loved how he drew parallels with other sports. In the end, the basic tenants of focused practice, supporting family members, access to great coaching, internal desire to succeed, willingness to commit to excellence...etc. are hard to trump in any endeavor of life.

I can't tell you the impact this book has had on giving me perspective on my own development and training as a tennis player. It has allowed me to see that the process wasn't as random as I had thought; that the hard work; delay of gratification and attention to detail allowed me to see things that other tennis players didn't simply because I employed 'purposeful practice' at every and all moments I was involved in the sport. This book goes into great detail about how a work ethic, allows ANYONE the opportunity to succeed by dispelling so many myths on why players, musicians, athletes, people in all sorts of industry become successful.Just loved his analysis referring to countless studies and real life examples of Earl and Tiger Woods, Mozart and his father, David Beckham and his work ethic. the wonders of the Polgar Sisters in chess. And the one common thread that one and all had to success?Read the book and find out for yourself. You won't be disappointed. And you might even find out something about yourself in the process.A wonderful read by a columnist for The Times (London); commentator for the BBC; a graduate of Oxford University and a two-time Olympian.

Yet another look, but an interesting one, of how excellence is really achieved and the skillful practice necessary to get there. Just reinforces what is necessary to achieve the highest levels of achievement in any field be it business, athletics, science or the arts. It also looks into some commonly held myths about excellence and questions some long held beliefs that may not be true.
