I own over 3 feet of golf instruction books on my bookshelf. This is one of the best for fundamental instruction and swing correction. The flight of the golf ball does not lie. It tells you how you are impacting the ball. If you have a fairly consistent miss, like a hook, a pull, a top, a slice, or any other other than a straight shot, John Jacobs tells you here what you're doing at impact. The first step in curing your swing is to get the correct diagnosis. Which is more than a lot of instructors will tell you. This book has helped me understand why I've been a pull-hooker for 20 years, and figure out what I must do to straighten it out. It's fundamental to improvement.

No one book will explain the perfect swing for every player. You pick the theory that works consistently for you. God help all of us who fall in love with theories and keep changing our swings. Or, so we think. You see how much that approach has helped the best of the best. HOWEVER, you have to know theories to be able to figure out what works for you. What I liked about this classic is that Jacobs gets right to the point, without skipping the essentials. Grip. His approach is direct and simple. Too many of the modern authors drone on and on and seem to complicate the swing. Buy this one for the pictures, if nothing else. Honestly, let's just put it in the hole as quickly and painlessly as possible.

I found this book to be the very best of all golf instruction books, yes, even vs. the current ones (I am a 6-handicap). John Jacobs was the longtime greatest teacher in Europe whom Jack Nicklaus and so many others recommended most highly. The absolute fundamentals of the swing and game are all in this great book, and it has the best illustrations available--to this day-- by the gifted golf illustrator, Anthony Ravielli, who did similarly fantastic illustrations for Ben Hogan's Five Lessons. Jacobs, a former top European tour player from England and THE acknowledged top European teacher before anyone ever heard of David Leadbetter, discusses WHY you are to do certain things, and emphasizes throughout the book how the ball flight shows you what you are doing right and doing wrong. He builds from the all-important grip and stance. When things get complicated in this manual, he then submits them to the reader in more simplistic fashion, such as this: The swing is "two turns and a swoosh." He uses this simplicity throughout, but provides plenty of rationale and detail on top of that--all the detail you'll ever need-- as he explains the "why." In this way, you can correct your own faults on the range or golf course, not needing a "swing coach" at all times as so many of today's tour players need to have at each tournament, something Jack Nicklaus always scoffed at. Another example: The proper stance, accompanied by a beautiful Ravielli sketch, early in the book-- shows a golfer taking his stance on train tracks, the feet and the clubface direction being parallel to each other, with the clubhead on the far rail facing the target and the golfer's feet on the near rail--parallel to the target, NOT pointing at it-- is priceless. Just one of many examples of the fundamentals being explained with simplicity and with beautiful illustrations.If I had to recommend two golf instruction books, it would be Practical Golf and Hogan's Five Lessons. If just one book, then Practical Golf. Both are great for brand-new beginners and low-handicappers alike, with Practical Golf being even better for beginners than Hogan's book, which, while geared toward the fundamentals, explains them in rather deep detail-- maybe a bit more than a beginner would enjoy learning right away. Not so with Practical Golf. BOTH books focus on the fundamentals that will make you a great player, and NOT on the latest fads (such as "hitting late," which Jacobs briefly addresses as to why it's a bad idea).Practical Golf was recommended to me in 1976 by Rick Werner, a club professional then at Quaker Ridge Golf Club (he had a scratch handicap or even a bit lower), with one of the most beautiful swings & sweetest tempos I've ever seen (a la Fred Couples and Ernie Els), who hit the ball a mile and seemingly perfect every time. He used to hit balls on the range, alone, when no other balls were out there, and the balls he hit all ended up in a straight line between him and the target about 300 yards away. Rick used to play with famous Golf Channel teaching professional Jim McLean, who was then the assistant pro at Westchester Country Club. (I know, because as a young man then, I luckily joined them twice to play a few holes.) I go back to this book to this day (2015).Enjoy this absolute classic!

Very sound advice and easy to understand. Played much better right after reading this one.

I wanted to take a moment to review this great book. I got it earlier this week, and I started reading it right away...I'm new to golf, but I have STRUGGLED really badly. If you can imagine a bad shot on a golf course, I have hit it. I hit bad slices, shanks, topped shots etc etc etc. But I LOVE the game. I read Hogan's 5 lessons, didn't really help, I read 'keys to the effortless swing' and it just didn't connect. I've taken a few lessons, not much help either...I don't know how to explain it, but this book is doing the trick for me. I went golfing last week before I read this, and I shot horribly, all my usual problems...I sat down this week and read through half of this book (I haven't even finished it yet) and I went out to the range for an hour and I played a 9 hole round...I literally hit 12 shots better. That may sound unbelievable, but it happened.Here are the reasons why I think this book is great:1. The explanations are really simple.2. This book stresses how to change common errors, and it really describes these errors beautifully.3. This is the first book which acknowledges that a really good swing leads with the left hip, but that a pretty good swing can lead with the arms, and this was my major problem, I was so focused on what other golfers advocate, that I was blind to trying something else.4. This is the first method where I didn't feel like I was thinking about 10 different things standing over the ball, in fact I was thinking about very little in my swing and while that may be completely obvious to some golfers, it certainly wasn't obvious to me.So, if you are a duffer and a hacker like me, this is a great book to try. I didn't feel like I rebuilt my swing and I felt really comfortable with the techniques found in 'practical golf'! Thanks!

I've done PCI designs in the past but this was my first PCIe design. After a few hours of reading, I was familiar enough to tackle an FPGA design. I did find that I had to read it in a different order than it's written. I have almost a dozen post-its bookmarking useful pages.

this book was written before the pci express standard was ratified so much of the information is speculative. nevertheless, it is well written and complete.

The book is well organized. The illustrative examples are very helpful. The contents of the book follow the specification very well but much better organized.

It's huge, and slow going, but the book is quite detailed and generally clear explaining the concepts.

I have 2 PCEe books and this one is the best one. I don't have any experience on PCI and PCI-X. This books really have a lot of basic stuff which is very good for PCIe beginners.

My daughter is the hugest fan of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, so we got a couple more in the series. It's just not the same without the singsongy rhyming. This book has a more traditional storytelling, and isn't rhythmic like the original (I assume the bed one is the original), so it isn't as beloved, nor as fun to read out loud. It's a cute little book, though.

Another great story. "Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car" is still the best one, but I'd say this is a tie for second with "...Jumping on the Bed." The alliteration and rhyming words delight a two-year-old.

I got two of these books which are really good ('jumping on the bed', and 'reading in bed'). Which is why I thought I'd purchase more from this author. But this one is terrible! just awful! It just feels thrown together with very little thought. Trust me...skip this one.

my daughter loves these book bought the whole series. We've read them so many times she knows them by heart. It's a great way to get the kids into reading.

My 2 year daughter loves these books. We read them every night. We own a few from this series and she enjoys them all. Great illustration and perfect for bedtime (short and sweet )

for a child who is used to jumping on the bed. Perhaps she will "get" the concept later!

Doesn’t have a good flow. Not much thought put into this book. My daughter has almost every Five Little Monkey book. This is her favorite series. She does not ask for us to read this one non stop.

From the very beginning, M's Price's book brought me in to the story. The story is about Kate Zook. She loves her family and she loves God. Kate is a very caring and supportive daughter. Two tragedies happen in her family and Kate is wracked with guilt over what she felt was her role in the tragedies. Her one brother was left paralyzed in one of the tragedies. His resentment and personal bitterness is focused on Kate. Consequently she strives to be more determine to help her family. Her parents are withdrawn from dealing with their own pain. This leaves Kate to shoulder her brothers anger, rage and accusations . Then Samuel Esh, a local young man, returns from his own wild rumspringa. He is attracted to. Kate and her loyalty and gentle ways. What will be Samuel's impact. I loved this story. This is the BEST Amish fiction book I have ever read. The story is well thought out and will touch everyone and make you think about the reality of our actions, personal forgiveness, God's forgiveness and healing. Thank you M's Price for this book.

Sarah Price is one of my favorite authors. I love her books! I love that they are clean, honor God, and are hard to put down. They're easy reading and very enjoyable. Her characters are some of the most realistic I have ever read about! I refrain from telling anything about the story in my reviews because I don't want to spoil it for other readers. Read it! You'll enjoy it!

This novel seemed to give a realistic portrayal of Amish farm life today. Hard work, faith in god, and acceptance of everything that happens in life as part of God's plan. Stunted emotions, compared to those in the outside world. The main character keeps her guilt bottled up inside, and never really fights for what she wants. It's a very different mind set. The emotions held by the principal characters are somewhat nuanced despite the either-or, black-white nature of their interpretations. A nice romance, ultimately, and some important lessons learned.

Well developed story of love, quilt and forgiveness. By accepting total responsibility for the wrong actions of another, both parties were living in sadness.

I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.4.5 stars — Dude, if this is the end of the series, I’m going to be really sad. Each story has been a fascinating look at hockey in a small town, and this one just brought that all together in the most perfect way. You can totally read it as a standalone, but if you do read them as a series, you’ll see how all the little events from the previous two books have culminated in the conflict/climax/resolution of this book.These YAs really do have a more mature feel to them, though this one was perhaps the tamest. There is a somewhat steamy scene, but it’s mostly cut away (and fits the maturity of the characters). But it tackles some difficult subjects, like hazing, bullying, mental health, and other subjects that are too specific to mention. I just loved the way the story played out. Ms. Cross really showcased how difficult it would be to take a stand against a toxic environment that has existed and been allowed to fester for decades. I could see this happening in a small town, and I truly felt for Jake and how torn he was over how he felt, and what he wanted for the future. If he’d just made the right decision all along, I don’t think it would have had the same impact…and I don’t think it would have had the same sense of realism. Anyways, I really don’t want to get into the plot too much, just know that I was gripped and that I was so happy with how it played out.Now onto our characters! Brooke was kind of fascinating, but I feel like we kind of got shortchanged on her story. We got hints of things that happened in Austin, and with her Dad…and while some bits were fleshed out, others were left more vague. I was actually a bit let down by that. And not only that, but there was no real development with what was going on with her Mom, and how that played out. Which is okay in some respects, b/c there was enough else going on, but then why have those bits mentioned? I also get it in that when something so difficult is happening at home, it can make sense to just compartmentalize it and focus on other things to deal.However, I LOVED the whole girl’s hockey team story!! While there was a part of me that was skeptical about the rate at which Brooke learned and excelled, in the end I’m not sure I really cared. I loved seeing the challenges they faced, and the support that Sheriff Hammond gave his team. I also loved seeing Brooke develop a friendship with Rosie.Jake was so not what I was expecting. I’m not sure what I was expecting, it’s been a bit since I read the previous two books, so I didn’t have a good memory of him necessarily, but he was so much more earnest and…just endearing than I was expecting. I really ended up loving him. He was hardworking, and caring, but caught up in the craziness that is Otters hockey. But deep down he was a genuinely good guy.And I really loved the two of them together. I felt the connection and the crushes on both sides, the fascination with one another. It felt real, and sweet, and just made me happy. They were good for one another.About my only complaint is that this book, like the others, had odd time jumps. I guess I don’t mind that happening, but then maybe mention the time in between. It just always took me a minute to adjust and be like “oh wait, so it must be like weeks later now”.Needless to say, I started this one late last night and stayed up way too late because I had a hard time putting it down (though I did eventually). There’s just something about the way Ms. Cross writes that sucks me in and has me compelled to read just one more chapter.

I remember reading the previous book in this series and thinking it was cute read with a bit of emotional depth so I was curious to pick up another book in this series. Here we have Brooke who is new in town after her father went to jail and her and her mother had to move in with her grandma. Her mother is having some mental health issues and Brooke is also dealing with some of that herself. Being the new girl in town is not easy in the middle of all that. Trying out for the new girls hockey team is her way of challenging herself and maybe fitting in a bit.Jake is the star of the hockey team and future captain this new season. High school hockey is the biggest thing in town and that comes with a lot of pressure and years-long tradition. Including a hazing ritual that he has to be a part of and goes terribly wrong.There are things about this author’s writing that I enjoy but there are also other things that I just can’t connect with. I do like that the characters in this series usually have to deal with some issues that make them have to grow and mature. That’s where our characters find themselves in this book, especially Jake. He’s in a really tough spot and some of the decisions he has to make have the chance of impacting his plans for the future.At the same time, ON THIN ICE was very slow moving. I’m not sure if it’s because there are some scenes that go on and on about things I didn’t find all that interesting or relevant to the plot. That could just be me. The plot, however, was something I enjoyed. I liked seeing these two characters help each other through some tough situations. But I can’t say we dug deep enough for my liking into what made these two tick. Or even deep enough into some of the more serious subjects this book tackles. I wanted more character development. Yes, there are actions that show the characters are maturing and thinking for themselves but I think we could’ve had some better development in the internal struggle of how they got there.This is still a cute read and if you’re like me and don’t usually read young adult contemporary, this author may be a good fit.

If youre going for your CNA this has everything! Im currently studying for my CNA and i know ill get my state test aced the first time!!! This has very detailed pictures explaining what do to, how to roll them over and so on. Very glad i bought this book!

I used Mosby's Textbook for Nursing Assistants over twenty years at a high school nursing program. When it came time to reorder new books, my colleague and I would review other nursing assistant text books. No other publication came close to identifying clearly the salient points of skill procedures, patent dignity, cleanliness and safety than Shella Sorrento's nursing assistant text books.

This amazing book is a must have for any healthcare professional. Very easy to read and to understand, loaded with photos and illustrations, it gives step-by-step instructions on over 100 healthcare procedures. With over 800 pages, a glossary section and a CD-ROM, The MOSBY'S TEXTBOOK FOR NURSING ASSISTANTS is indeed an excellent guidance system for the CNA and the regular person taking care of another. As a NURSING ASSISTANT, this very important book will ever be my point of reference.This latest edition is well updated with everything pertaining to basic and intermediate healthcare.Most highly recommend to anyone who is in this field or contemplating healthcare as a career.

Needed it for school

While you will learn all you need for the "written" test ( it's actually on computer), the bookdoesn't help to give you a heads up on the Skills test, taken the same day. A listing of all thesteps involved in each one, with a list of supplies needed for each would have been good.There is a CD that comes with the text that purportedly has such but the audio/visual partleaves out a lot and I found myself printing out the text for each skill from the CD. I took asix-week intensive course with only five weeks of classes (M - TH), only half of which dealtwith the skills. Ten classes, three hours each, with eight other students to learn all the 22skills was just not enough time to get the practice necessary and while my test is still morethan 3 weeks away I feel shaky on the Skills. Six days of practicum at a hospital was somewhathelpful, but the practice there while basically the same, was different enough from what thestate test calls for as to confuse and frustrate this student. Again, the text is good as far as itgoes but should give fair warning ( and advice) on the, to my mind, more important issue ofpreparing for the practice (skills): eg. schedule study sessions with your fellow students, allwhose phone numbers you have, using the classroom on campus (with permission and availabilitysecured) to practice the skills!

The book is great! The only reason I'm giving the workbook 3 stars is because the person who made the workbook did not think ahead of time and made all the pages printed on front and back. So when you go to turn in a chapter for instance chapter 1..the first page of chapter two will be in the back of chapter 1s last page. It's a problem when you have to turn these pages in because then you're missing pages from certain chapters.

In the circle of friends I grew up with, being called witty was about the highest praise one could receive. We never bothered to define the term precisely, but rather understood that it implied a degree of cleverness and facility with language that went well beyond just being funny. So, what exactly is wit, how does it work, and why does being considered witty matter so much to us? Those are precisely the questions that James Geary attempts to answer in Wit’s End, his exhaustingly researched and frequently engaging treatise on just about every imaginable aspect of the topic.At the simplest level, the author explains that wit can be regarded as a kind of metaphor: two disparate concepts connected by a commonality in sight, sound, or thought are combined for an incongruously comedic effect. Take puns, for example, such as the title of the 1970s rock album ‘You Can Tune a Piano but You Can’t Tuna Fish’. (Incidentally, this is not one of the dozens of puns that Geary cites, but it has been a personal favorite for a long time now.) The book then expands on this basic theme with chapters detailing how wit can be found in everything from literary fiction to fine art to popular music to religious tracts to political discourse.It deserves mention that the author himself is very clever in how he presents this analysis—the chapter on witty verbal banter is written as the script for a stage play, he offers the section on how wit works on the brain as a scientific research paper, visual wit is treated as an art history lecture, and so on. That structure, along with the thorough way in which the subject is documented across time and tradition, is what I found to be most compelling about Wit’s End. On the other hand, I also caught myself wondering at times in my reading whether this was really too narrow of a topic to justify a volume-length treatment. I am not sure that question was ever resolved, but I did come away from the experience both amused and enlightened.

Fun, unexpected, and at times, dizzying, Wit's End is a clever collection of expressions and explanations of wit. Thematic coherence may not be its strong suit, but for a quick blitz of ideas and thought on the topic it is a good read. It even tackles neuroscience. Although the locus of wit is surely in the brain, its anatomic parsing in this book falls a bit short of shedding light on the concept--but the attempt is appreciated. Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists has a bit more room for the reader than Wit's End, but in both there is something for everyone, and for simple showmanship this wins out.

If you appreciate the clever use of words you'll love this gem. I learned two things.... first, that I may have a good sense of humor but I, alas, am far from being witty. Second, I found out why cannibals don't eat clowns.

The book mixes academic examinations of the subject (neuroscience, psychology, history, etc.) with illuminating examples that range from hilarious to devilishly clever. The puns alone are worth the read. And I particularly enjoyed the examples of jive talk. An enjoyable read that both enlightens and tickles.

I thought it would be wittily written but is ponderously written making the reader dig out humor along with the author’s mainly uninteresting writing! I hoped for fun and got a turpid text I won’t recommend to anyone! Sad.

The review that I read that recommended this book went into great detail of a very minor part of the narrative. Basically this book offers very little insight into "WIT" but a lot into the authors' background; and that is nothing special.

The book was interesting from a historical point of view and I learned some new things about wit. The author really tried to fill out the book and repeated ideas a little too much. Could have been a good article instead.

Creatively written; lots of nice quotable thoughts; mostly an easy read. Touched on the topic of wit with lightness, creativity and brevity, but I was hoping for a bit more insight and/or rigor. But overall, meh.
