This book made me laugh. It was enormously entertaining.I have a lot of "dooms-dayer" and "prepper" friends and family members who are strong believers in the apocalypse and that right now is the time to stock up on food, water, guns, ammo, cigarettes, and tampons.And before this book, those ideas just didn't speak to me. Not even remotely.So I read it to become more educated about the mindset of the "dooms-dayers," and perhaps gain some insight on how to best prepare for an apocalyptic scenario, or at least the moment WSHTF.Mission accomplished. This book delivered both outcomes for me. It also cracked me up, and made me quite grateful for my life, however temporary it may be.After reading it, I walked away feeling all the more committed to living my life with the intention of making the world better, as opposed to preparing for my potential doom or limping survival.Here's a beautiful, apt, and terrifying snippet that sums up the essence of what I gleaned from the book:"On every highway, there's a drunk driver hurtling at 80 miles an hour in two tons of steel. In every neighborhood, there's a thief armed with a deadly weapon. In every city, there's a terrorist with a bloody agenda. In every nuclear country, there's a government employee sitting in front of a button. In every cell in our body, there's the potential to mutate into cancer. They are all trying to kill us. And they don't even know us. They don't care that if they succeed, we will never know what tomorrow holds for us.The tragedy of life – robbing it of its fullness and brilliance – is the knowledge that we might die at any moment. And though we schedule our lives so precisely, with calendars and day planners and mobile phones and personal information management software, that moment is completely beyond our control.Death is a guillotine blade hanging over our heads, reminding us every second of every day that this life we treasure so much is no more important to the universe than those of the 200,000 insects each of us kills with the front of our car every year.Nature knows no tragedies or catastrophes. It's almost like reading a too-true fiction. I definitely recommend reading it if you're interested in the subject.With that being said, I do not agree with the deliberately provocative title, even though I think it's a great curio. This book is not likely to save my life - but some of the ideas this book offered just might be worth pursuing well before the moment WSHTF.

This is kind a wild read, but it's a good read. If you are a prepper, or just worried about where this world is headed, read this book. As someone who would not describe myself as paranoid, I often feel paranoid when I am buying bugout bag items or working on survival skills. Reading this book put a lot of those things in perspective and gave me a lot of good ideas about how to avoid becoming a victim in the event the word goes to sh!t. This is not a survival book. It's a journey worth reading.

This book is really about the author's journey to self-reliance in disaster scenarios with some of his "aha" moments along the way. It has a "Game" flavor to it if you've read that book. I suspect some of the research is now pretty much out of date since it was done a decade ago . In the book, the author lives in fear and addresses it with learning and experience. It's a pretty awesome journey. This is a single guy's view and much doesn't apply much to working families so it came up short for me. If you are single, have lots of free time (e.g. no full-time job), focus, and the money, you too can do all the things in this book in a 2-3 years.

I really enjoy Strauss's style of writing. It's a fun narrative with factual information intertwined. I have read just about every book he has written at this point. His journalistic style keeps my attention and his dry sense of humor is pretty aligned with mine. It was a good book for me...I think you'll enjoy it too.

Great, great book. Much like The Game, and The Truth, Emergency is written in an autobiographical fashion. Neil Strauss dives deep into the world of Survivalist culture.Neil has a way to write in an entertaining, easy-to-read manner. While the book isn't exactly a step-by-step guide, Neil dives into the many different forms of survivalist culture, from Elites getting second passports to lock-picking expert "urban survivalists". Towards the end, Neil utilizes all the skills he's picked up along the way, stepping into action when a true catastrophic event lands on his doorstep.It wouldn't be a Neil Strauss book without discussing relationships. Neil includes how his ever-consuming survivalist lifestyle affected the relationship for better and for worse with his then-girlfriend. Very entertaining.Even if you read it for strictly entertainment purposes, you will find this book amazing. If you are a fan of Neil Strauss, I highly recommend this book.

Great book, not what I expected. As a matter of fact, at first skip I thought I made a mistake. I was looking for lots of survival techniques and tricks. Turns out, it is about how to learn all these things, and what you might not have thought was necessary to learn. So in the end, I read it straight through, and was impressed by what he accomplished.

In The Open Organization, Jim Whitehurst presents a compelling, modern alternative to the traditional top-down hierarchy of business organization. Born from the open source software movement, Whitehurst advocates for a participative organization that values ability more than title. Throughout the book Whitehurst shares personal examples of his own transformation from a traditional leader to an open one. The stories are sometimes embarrassing, but his honesty and frankness are a key part of what defines a successful leader in an open organization.Even better, to my mind, are the examples that Whitehurst shares of other companies and leaders on the cutting edge of the open organization model. It's one thing to read a personal account of one company's efforts; but to see that company in the context of a larger movement to redefine the structure of success in the business world is truly eye opening.I've been using and contributing to open source software for over a decade, so much of what Whitehurst shares feels self-evident to me. Of course collaborative decision making is hard and messy, but of course the results are almost always better than one person making command decision alone. Despite my own belief in the power of openness, I had yet to see a thorough examination of the business value to such an approach, versus the community value.I had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Whitehurst for TechCrunch.com in early 2012 (http://tcrn.ch/Ix8AKF) and the seeds of many of the ideas in The Open Organization were clearly present even then. Each chapter closes with "Jim's Leadership Tips", which is a simple list of questions and suggestions to try within your own organization. These are not sweeping pronouncements, nor are they particularly challening. They are suggestions for things you can try right now, today, to start building success with an open organization. The scope of these suggestions is almost always small, allowing you to try them out one at a time, either with an individual or small team.Whitehurst does not shy away from the reality that an open organization is hard work. It takes a real committment from leadership to pursue the model that Whitehurst proposes. He reiterates this fact several times through each chapter. Gore (9,000 people in 30 countries).In an era when a technology-enabled mob can overthrow a dictator, the business question is whether the same energy can be used to drive organizations, serve customers, produce goods or develop software.Jim Whitehurst believes it can and he is in a unique position to make this assertion.As the former chief operating officer at Delta Air Lines, where he took a lead role in the company’s much needed restructuring, he understood and ran a top -down, command and control organization. He currently heads Red Hat, the world’s leading provider of open-source software, employing more than 7,000 people and with a market value of more than $ 10 billion. I read this with a purpose to better understand Red Hat and the culture of the organization. In that respect I made a really good choice and satisfied my needs. I am better for the read and would encourage others who want to get a view of a meritocracy to join me.

My 7 yr. old granddaughter, a voracious reader and writer, was thrilled to receive her own dictionary. The thesaurus is very helpful expanding her writing skills. This dictionary will last her a lifetime. I have the same one. I would like to see this available in large type.

I had this same dictionary but I wore it out. I work crossword puzzles every day to keep my mind busy. I don't always know the answers so have to look up in the dictionary. I find it useful when I can't remember a couple of letters in a word. As I get older.....actually I am old...lol....I think....were there two ss's in that word or one so I go look it up in my handy dandy dictionary.

I was so tired of my kids asking me to look up a word on the computer that I finally ordered a dictionary. My only regret is not doing it sooner. In this world where all knowledge is available instantly and right at our finger tips (and coming from who knows where), it's nice to actually sit down and turn real pages to find answers. The thesaurus at the bottom of the pages is a handy resource. I've loved watching my kids take it to their rooms while reading a book so they can look up words they don't know. The computer now gets much needed rest while we turn to the dictionary more and more.

Bought for the local school. The graduates each get a copy as a gift during their last year.

This book is awesome. I love the Thesaurus at the bottom of the page! Wonderful idea. I definitely recommend this. It arrived quickly and properly packaged.

Great combination of both dictionary and thesaurus. Both here are great. I use this one more than any other thesaurus or dictionary. Why should I when I have both in the same book.

Don’t like the font on the book compared to the size of the book. Wish had a large font . Will be returning it to get another book.

My son, of 44 years old has ADHD. His letters to me over the last 25 years have been at 3rd grade level. Even with special ed and etc...his spelling and writting, not to mention understanding similiatries between words, was very poor. He requested a dictionary so, I sent him one. He's in prison and did not have one to use, nor are they allowed to borrow. Very strict rules. Since he got the dictionary, not only has his spelling improved, his writting,structuring the sentences improved, but he now has learned words from the Thesaurus easily, that help him get his point across. Just having to look for the spelling, seeing other words that he has not used before has been exceptional for him. I'm sooo thankful I got this book. He's taking classes for welding and also language and this has deffinately made a difference for him and increased his word power. Thanks again Amazon for making it so easy to get it to him.
