I'm new to the state and this has been a "go-to" guide for me to discover and feel reasonably confident about trying out new routes. Each ride description suggests a parking area for staging and a map as well as a topo profile. Mike's prose can be a little on the corny side at times, but overall I think he does a good job of fairly describing what you should encounter for road quality, traffic, typical weather, etc.One small omission (someone correct me please if I'm wrong) but I don't think the crossing of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is included in the book. If you're going to ride in the Gig Harbor area, I'd recommend parking near the bridge in Tacoma and riding it across--it's in my view a far superior bicycling experience to crossing the Golden Gate or Brooklyn Bridges.Described in this book, I've enjoyed the Flying Wheels loop from Redmond; Mt. Baker climb from Glacier; Mt. Rainier climbs from entrance stations; Lion's Rock climb from Ellensburg. The book gets carried from my bedside to recliner and studied for new possibilities. I highly recommend this guide.

This is about as good as a book cycling guide can get, and vastly better than any Falconguide. It's pleasant to read, very clear, and a nice number of rides, many more than anyone is going to do unless you're a local. I wish he'd done the traditional listing thing: the ten best climbing routes, ten most scenic rides, etc. He's reluctant to rank, so if you're doing a bike trip where you're going to do ten rides you're left trying to read between the lines to divine which are the best ones. I also have a sense that, like all guide books, this one sticks to big roads and long rides--I have to believe there are lots of little back roads he isn't covering. Check out bestrides.org for a better alternative, albeit only for CA and OR.
Seems like an excellent book. It's beyond the scope of my riding capabilities but it's nice to know where the nice routes are.
Classic guide for beautiful and challenging cycling routes in the state of Washington. Photos, descriptions, maps and tip sheets are all excellent. And cycling is the way to really see your state. Love it.
