Amazon.com Review

Jeanette Lee, a.k.a. the Black Widow, is one of the hottest players on the women's professional pool tour. While some critics maintain she's a star only because she's beautiful, with her long, black hair and tight-fitting, fashionable clothes, Lee has the skills to live up to her fierce persona. In The Black Widow's Guide to Killer Pool, Lee shares how she became the player to beat and helps readers improve their game. Part one explains the fundamentals of pool--from how to grip the cue and develop a smooth, level stroke to how to select a cue and a table. She also offers up practice drills for accuracy and control, games (straight pool, eight ball, and nine ball--"by far the sexiest game"), and even a few trick shots to practice. Mastering these skills should let you beat the boss, your uncle Fred, and even the guy down at the corner bar. The next part focuses on the mental aspects of competition--key for a game that is, in Lee's estimation, "90 percent mental, 10 percent on the table." In it she discusses how to get into the zone and how to develop a winning attitude. She also addresses practical matters, such as how to find tournaments, and describes her match day preparations. Without a lot of practice, you'll not likely be following Lee onto a professional tour. But with Lee's help you will be able to gain confidence and play to win. Remember, "Every shot, whether you make it or miss it, is a step toward something better." This book is an excellent first step. --M. Stein

Okay. If you're looking for drills, this is not the book you want. If you'd like to learn more about the mental game of pool and a deep look into Jeanette Lee's personal story, then you'll find this book interesting. In the biographical sense, it read pretty well. Jeanette tells of some of her darkest times and struggles and you'll feel like you're privy to information that would otherwise be off limits to a complete stranger. I liked this idea but, it wasn't what I was looking for. I thought it would be short personal stories followed by drills, drills, drills. There are barely any drills to be had with this book. I wanted to rate it 2 or 2.5 because of this but, felt it deserved a 3 because she was willing to be so open about her life. The other reason I only gave it a (2.5)- 3 is because the Kindle version-which I bought- has images that are way out of sync from their corresponding literature. It's bad. I'm talking about having to go maybe 7 pages ahead to find a picture and then going 7 pages back to try and see what she's referencing. That was ridiculous. I've never read a Kindle book that was so out of sync in this regard. The only time I've read something that lined up worse is when I've converted material into PDF! That is saying a lot.I'd recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a sort of biography and is willing to accept the pictures being out of sync; sometimes by 7 pages or more.DO NOT buy this book for practice drills. There are better ones out there.

What she wrote about , I tried it ,and it has definitely helped me ,where I had positive results within the first two weeks .Her story is a very down to earth type ,which can relate to lots of folks ,and I am a young at heart 58yr old guy. What I did while reading was highlight all the many important and helpful areas ,so that while I read over at other times ,these pointers will readily become apparent .I do wish that she could have gone into more detail on other subjects ,but I guess we have to earn more money from follow up books .I do recommend this book for one who wants to glean any helpful info on pool ,which can help improve their game and of course look eagerly forward to any follow up material from her .Thankyou Jeannie ....Anthony H.

A glimpse into her life, and many playing tips. Entertaining.

Loved the book! Not only did it have good pool playing instruction, but was very good in stressing the mental side of things and importance of your attitude in winning. Really helped me in improving my game and break out of the self - defeat mode I would get into, as a woman, when playing against men much better at pool than me. Now I'm not such an easy win for them and make them work for it. I've even won a few matches against better players (better for now, that is). Whereas before, I never even came close. Again, great book and very inspiring.

Downloaded book and was satisfied except for the shooting drills weren't on same page as the pictured set-up. I guess this was due to the book being downloaded. Content was good and her story had interesting aspect on her and the trials and tribulations of trying to be a professional pool player.

A WONDEROUS READ!!!! I truly loved the book. I hardly knew anything about Jeanette. I also thoroughly enjoyed the insight and information she relates to the reader on the game.I have been playing for over 20 yrs and the most important thing I have learned is that no matter how 'advanced' a player may be, there is still more to learn. In eevry book I read and game I play, I learn something new or it has me think about how I may have approached something in the game. This book made me think about some of the ways that I approach my games, and has helped me to improve my win/loss ratio. My only complaint on this is I purchased the Kindle edition and the Diagrams are nowhere near the actual text concerning it. I think it is a minor data entry glitch that I hope will be rectified soon.A definite must read for any player and great inspiration for everyone!

I don't find it that common that people who haave achieved some measure of success write so clearly and honestly to share their insights. Perhaps in this sport there are less stakes than in investing or business or something. Regardless, the things she said about practice and attitude, socializing, and mindset are applicable to a wide variety of disciplines, not just pool.

I just deleted the first review I wrote after a very frustrating experience with the Kindle edition on the DX. I finally realized the problem was with the Kindle, not the book. The diagrams don't appear anywhere near the portions of text discussing them. And while the diagrams ARE numbered, the discussion in the text does not refer to the diagram number at all.For example, the trick shots are all discussed in chapter 11, but the diagrams appear in chapter 13-18. The diagrams in chapter 11 are about breaks.Very frustrating. I did give the book five stars in this review, because AFTER I FIGURED OUT why I was so confused, I realized how great this book is. She really does put the essential principles in perspective, and my experience on my pool table has changed for the better after reading this book (for the second time). But the second time I read it, I had the diagrams on my computer screen, while I read the text on my Kindle. It would be nice if Amazon fixed these kinds of problems. Do they care?

I've known Darryl's work for a while through houseplant Instagram circles, and very pleased that he released this book. Like his account, it is accessible, personable and informative. He frames houseplant care through thoughtful consideration and observation, and in doing so, trains the reader—and houseplant enthusiast—to better care for their plants.

I really appreciate Darryl Cheng’s logic when it comes to houseplants. It’s guided the way I look at and care for my plants. I work at a flower shop that also sells plants and I share his techniques and thoughts about watering and light and natural leaf loss with customers daily as they purchase plants for their space. I’ve read so many plant books. If you could only have one houseplant book I would confidently say this is the one to pick.

I’m not a new plant parent, I’ve had plant babies for a while now, but I love this book!! I love Cheng’s approach to plants! His ideas of aeration and proper soil and how he explains light is mind expanding! His ideas are simple, but mind blowing & game changing!Thank you!!@PlantPS

Great book for those dabbling in Plant Parenthood to those who are already immersed in it. The book gives excellent explanations for things like the plants relationship to light, water and soil. Dispells common misconceptions and gives plant-centric advice. Very good book for shifting your plant care to more than just decor, and ensuring thriving, healthy living plants!

This book is not only informative and easy to understand, but it is chalk full of great photos, charts, and illustrations. This isn't a step by step care guide, but instead a book full of information that helps you understand your own plants' needs. Overall, this has to be the best written and most helpful house plant book I've ever come across!

I love this book! Gives great information so you can understand the "why's" of effective plant care. The authors tone really resonates with me, and I am getting a lot out of his well reasoned explanations and how-tos.This will be great for beginners to houseplant life, and more experienced folks will get a lot out of it too. Can't recommend this highly enough!!

Such an amazing book! Learning something everyday about houseplants and tips to keep them happy

I am a very new houseplant parent. Feeling overwhelmed by all of the plant care opinions and rules out there on the Internet I went searching for a book created for beginners. This book is amazing! It has everything a new plant parent could want. All of the basics are explained is detail while also remaining simple. I really appreciate the approach the author has; that all plants generally require the same care, it’s just that each plant needs a slight modification of that care. It makes going into this new journey much less overwhelming. I’m so glad I chose this book over the many others I looked at! Highly recommend!

#329,267 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is without a doubt my favorite Calvino book. I have read every English translation of his books, many of them two and three times. I wrote my MFA thesis on Calvino's writings and Giorgio De Chirico's paintings from 1911 to 1916. Six Memos is my most cherished work by Calvino and I have read it at least a dozen times or more, so much so that my paperback version(s) are dog eared and hopelessly marked with notes. The Kindle edition is a much needed addition to my library. I always return to this book for creative inspiration, especially when I am in a dry spell. A must have for anyone who creates, whether it be writing, music, or the visual arts. His principles apply across the board.

Calvino was a genius and although sometimes he's difficult to read--in fact sometimes he just doesn't seem to make much sense--it's worth the effort to struggle with his ideas. I prefer his stories to his essays, but this little book is an interesting glimpse into the mind of a great man.

5 stars. Six Memos for the Next Millennium, a series of lectures Calvino planned to give at Harvard, is a wonderful meditation on writing. This isn't a technical guide to writing. Rather, Calvino focuses on more abstract themes and their corresponding sensory experiences. There is a lot to unpack, and I will definitely be rereading this gem for years to come.

Until I read about Italo Calvino's brilliance in Umberto Ecco's Six Walks in the Fictional Woods, his works remained on bookstore shelves as clouds hang in the sky. Two titles attracted my attention: Why We Read the Classics and Under the Jaguar Sun. So fascinating were Calvino's thoughts about literature in the former and the three stories in the latter that I located the title Six Memos for the Next Millennium from Eco's book and bought it.This volume is constituted by five Charles Eliot Norton lectures Calvino gave in 1985, shortly before he died. They are titled "Lightness," "Quickness," "Exactitude," "Visibility," and "Multiplicity." In each, Calvino explores the invisible working of language, whether it is the expression of mythmakers, poets or scientists -- ancients (Ovid and Lucretius), early moderns (Bocaccio, Dante and Galileo) and contemporaries ((Borges, Kafka and Kundera). But as well, he reveals his own thoughts about his own writings. For amateurs like myself, I also was introduced to writers I'd either knew casually or not at all - Cavalcanti (whom I discovered while reading essays by Ezra Pound more than a decade ago) and Montale and Leopardi. What is most exciting is Calvino's ability to uncover what is hidden in the work of such modern writers as Jorge Luis Borges, whose work has fascinated me, but which I've never been confident I penetrated. As a result of reading Six Memos, I plan to return to Borges' works soon, but not until I've read some more of Calvino's fiction, including Cosmcomics, which I am currently reading, with great wonder. After reading Six Memos for the first time, I've now read it a second time, more slowly than the first time, and plan to read it a third, even more slowly. Six Memos reveals to the reader the challenges of any writer to be able to capture the truth. For any reader who also wishes to understand the magic of poetry, this is, in my judgment the best book I've ever read. It not only opens doors to anyone interested in the poetic art, it provides a set of criteria by which one may judge good poetry from bad.I've also sent the title to fiction- and poetry- reading friends, anticipating that they will find it as exciting.

This book is a collection of talks on writing Calvino was preparing as a series of documents specifying some important keys of literature that he felt needed to be recorded as crucial elements of literary tradition. Indeed, in his essay "Visibility," Calvino brings up his concern for the future of imagination and literature in a world so full of prefabricated imagery, where images are provided rather than solicited. While his initial impulse was to write six lectures, he evidently reported at one point of his process that he had ideas for eight, but in the end he only completed five. In her introduction, Esther Calvino clarifies that she decided to keep the title true to Italo's original intention and publish the series under the original title, despite the missing sixth. In the lectures themselves, Calvino provides the kind of insight and fascination with the making of literature that fuels so many of his best books. Rather than come across as a manifesto of his own brilliance, as the premise may sound, Calvino spends a lot of time in admiration of the work of other writers, from classics like Ovid and Dante to colleagues and contemporaries, like Francis Perec and Douglas R. Hofstadter. The lectures are of course sometimes punctuated with personal details about his own writing processes, but I found them very inviting and revealing about the ideas he was trying to point out. Each lecture dedicates itself to an aspect of literature that Calvino finds crucial: "Lightness," or the aspect of language that speaks directly to a reader and is not always weighed down with intellectual metaphor but with direct communication; "Quickness," or the immediacy of literature - the way it cuts through random detail to get to the necessary; "Exactitude," or the precision of language (and when it needs imprecision); "Visibility," or the power of imagery to convey ideas; and "Multiplicity," or the complexity of content. Calvino is a writer who has always presented a kind of fascinating enigma. His works is spectacularly visual, and while crucially uncategorizable in its sense of being not easy to nail down in the area of metaphor or theme (something that Calvino no doubt worked quite strenuously at, clear when he talks about a poem's meaning in "Exactitude" as being "not fixed, not definitive, not hardened into mineral immobility, but alive as an organism"), it is also quite accessible and always an enjoyable read. Calvino mastered the art of experimentalism that did not read as though one needed to be schooled in the traditions of literature to understand his intents. Though Calvino clearly wants to offer his lectures as guides for the necessities of literature for posterity, it is also a manifesto on the man's own aesthetic, though it is not a manifesto that demands the agreement of others, or the demand that others follow in his footsteps. Though Calvino does have moments of criticism, as when he accuses schools of dispensing "the culture of the mediocre," which I take to mean the conveying of literature as something with set meaning that we must all learn and emulate (or at least parrot back), and also directs a barb or two at the publishing industry when he supports experimentalism with the following caveat: "The demands of the publishing business are a fetish that must not be allowed to keep us from trying out new forms." In this lecture series, Calvino presents himself quite wise and worldly, but also quite direct and earnest. A reading of this work at the start of any literature course on almost any level of schooling might provide a stiff reminder that literature is a work of passion, not just analysis, and it also works in the realm of paradox, as Calvino himself presents--that it is structure in literature that is needed to make it transcend structure, that one needs to be as aware of the lack of success in literature as much as success to see the stuff of great literature. Calvino's last `memo,' "Consistency," was never written, but I could only imagine where he would have gone with it, which was always a strength of Calvino's work. The last lecture seems to bring to a full circle many of things he brings up through the series, but Calvino's work always found a way to extend beyond the full circle. Perhaps, in the end, the consistency needs to be ours, to make sure that this wisdom does not go to waste.

Review

Reflections on The Future of Packaging   “Plastics came of age in the 1950s, changing manufacturing forever. By telling the story that leads us to today’s linear packaging model, I illustrate that designing into the circular systems that came before it can be a short journey back.” — Attila Turos, former Lead, Future of Production Initiative, World Economic Forum   “In The Future of Packaging, we talk about the modern problem of waste, how packaging fits into that, and how we can design out of it. It is important to explain the forces that catalyzed the first formal recycling programs in the United States, defining the need to scale up on today’s systems.” — Christine “Christie” Todd Whitman, President, The Whitman Strategy Group; former Governor of New Jersey; and former administrator, Environmental Protection Agency   “Moving away from the linear take-make-waste model is an ethical imperative. In my chapter, I talk about the fragmented global recycling system and how investing in it presents opportunity for innovation, jobs creation, education, and, above all, prosperity.” — Jean-Marc Boursier, Group Senior Executive Vice President, Finance and Recycling & Recovery (Northern Europe), SUEZ   “Whether you are a packaging manufacturer, small business, local government, or consumer, this book will transform the issues we’ve avoided into ones we are motivated to tackle head-on. My chapter calls for a paradigm shift in producer responsibility, placing waste and materials management in the hands of the producer as an asset, not a burden.” — Scott Cassel, founder and CEO, Product Stewardship Institute   "Almost everything is technically recyclable, so why do we have so much waste? Improving our recycling system will help us turn more waste into worth. When we view recycling in terms of supply and demand, it is much easier to see where system advancements are needed. We hope The Future of Packaging brings this to life and shows how each of us can do our part to keep our environment and oceans free from litter.”  — Stephen Sikra, Associate Director, Corporate R&D, The Procter & Gamble Company    “Nearly every packaging ‘innovation’ that has made products lighter, less expensive, and more convenient can’t be recycled through public programs . . . and is thrown away after one use. In this book, we deep dive into the lightweighting trend and ways to maximize value for packages through design.” — Chris Daly, Vice President, Environmental Sustainability, Europe & Sub Saharan Africa, PepsiCo   “Packaging can be an important ally to help prevent waste, even for high-end products that often use excessive or nonrecyclable materials. My chapter has tips to help designers create premium yet sustainable packages—along with examples of brands that got it ‘just right.’” — Lisa McTigue Pierce, Executive Editor, Packaging Digest   “Packaging design isn’t just about the package but the processes associated with manufacturing, transporting, and distributing it. In this book, I bring the often-unseen preconsumer waste stream to light.” — Tony Dunnage, Group Director, Manufacturing Sustainability, Unilever   “The Future of Packaging: From Linear to Circular is today’s handbook for designing out of a world that feeds people a skewed version of what they need to be prosperous and brands a narrow view of what they can do to be profitable . . . Consumers care about where their products come from and what happens after they are done with them. Brands and designers need to pay attention.” — KoAnn Vikoren Skrzyniarz, founder and CEO, Sustainable Life Media and Sustainable Brands   “Consumers reward brands that make the responsible choice the easy one . . . Brands must today ask themselves, ‘How do we enable responsible consumption?’ The Future of Packaging is a resource for companies doing this heavy lifting.”  — Virginie Helias, Vice President, Global Sustainability, Procter & Gamble   “Leading the change you wish to see in your company can be challenging. The Future of Packaging contains practical models and powerful examples to champion sustainable programs. In my chapter, I take you through how we stewarded circular initiatives at Procter & Gamble and my insights for applying these at a company of any size.” — Lisa Jennings, Vice President, Global Hair Acceleration, Procter & Gamble

While the title might not instantly grab your attention, the content certainly will. I first found this book when I googled the author. His name was all over the news with an announcement his company made in Davos. This guy knows what he's talking about when it comes to sustainability and how to save our planet from swimming in trash. He's been doing it forever with great success. This book explains, with the help of several other contributing authors, how recycling is no longer a real "fix" to the earth's problem with waste, but that going the durable route and revisiting techniques used pre-WWII offers a real solution that we all should look into. While I'm not an expert in this niche, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in helping find a solution to our environmental issues.

This book was such an informative read, especially if you are trying to live a green lifestyle. We as humans really need to get off this disposable packaging non sense and start working together to help save the planet.

I think everyone should read this book! We as humans need to start taking responsibility for our actions and stop lying to ourselves! We need to make aggressive, proactive changes in what we are doing in order to save the planet. This book will help show people that we can change how we consume, to be more aligned with nature!

How to even begin reviewing Dante's crown jewel to the three part Divine Comedy? An absolutely daunting task. But certainly Dante gave us much more than the Bible can tell us about heaven. He gave us a fantastic blinding light show of celestial symmetry complete with song and dance by angels and souls that made it to paradise. Some prominent souls Dante met in paradise were Adam the first man who fell from grace and began the adventure for mankind, and the king Solomon, whose excess and debauchery would have earned any other mortal a certain place in hell. But because they were were God's elect and they only had to do time in purgatory before gaining entry of paradise. So unless one is super Biblical savvy, informed in astronomy, well versed in Greek mythology and has paid attention in school to European and middle eastern history from ancient times to the 13th century, one will miss many gems in Dante's presentation of God's Alpha and Omega plan for mankind and His exquisite design of the universe. Underpinned by His unchanging laws of the nature or laws of classical physics, the stars and planets orbit in perfect rhythm and position. Complex as Dante's 33 cantos are, fear not because in The Paradiso, our excellent translator John Ciardi gave us wonderful notes to cross check. We also live in the age of Google and Wikipedia. Uncovering the background of that unfamiliar name of a person or place is only a few keystrokes on the keyboard away. Just like 9 descending strata of hell, and the slow ascent to the different heights of purgatory, Dante's paradise too is an interstellar journey across the planets and stars, each orbit with lights more blinding and celestial hymns more haunting than the previous as Dante zooms across space in light speed with his sweetheart Beatrice as guide. At some point, I began to the wonder if I was reading Dante's poetry and not actually reading astronomy and the law of physics written by someone who lived centuries before the appearance of people like Newton, Einstein and even Hawking. For those of us who love and know the Bible, Dante gave us the additional info on the Biblical characters by writing about his encounters with such eminent characters like the first man Adam, the blessed virgin Mary, Jesus' favourite disciple, Apostle John the eagle, and king Solomon just to name a few. Mysteries such as how did Adam remain in the garden of Eden, the language he spoke and the exact offence Adam angered God to give mankind the inheritance of the original sin. It is clearly evident that Catholicism was Dante's Christianity with the blessed Virgin Mary getting more ink and praise compared to her son Jesus. The protestant church did not exist during Dante's time since Martin Luther was still a futuristic figure by two hundred years. It was surprising to read Dante's brutal and scathing criticism of the papacy and the corruption of the Catholic church pre-Lutheran times. But maybe I shouldn't be surprised that discerning educated people like Dante and Luther, especially in the Latin language could cross check the actions of the Catholic church with the Latin Bible. I was also at first surprised theologically by Dante's strong advocate for predestination and God's favour for only His elect, a theology on God's grace we often associate with John Calvin, who also came roughly the same time as Martin Luther, which was 2 centuries after Dante. But I shouldn't be surprised if the Bible I read today is the same as the Latin Bible of Dante that contains the same clear messages that God saves only his elect and his criteria is only known by Him. It was interesting to read that people of olden times like Dante (lived 900 years ago) also grappled with questions like the fate of virtuous people who lived the earth and died without knowing Jesus. Much more widespread was ignorance of Jesus in olden times before the digital age of internet and when bibles were hand copied in a few languages, chiefly Latin. Accessibility to Jesus then was acutely reserved for monks and the educated who had their hands on the precious few hand copied of bibles in extremely limited circulation. Also the souls of babies who died too soon. Where do their souls go? Dante seized his chance to get answers from the higher powers and was comforted to know that God had reserved places for these ignorant virtuous souls and the babies that died too soon. But alas places in Heaven are limited to those God has elected and they are filling up even as I write this book review. Once the last throne is filled, the day of reckoning will be upon mankind and all will be revealed. We will see how close Dante's vision of hell, purgatory and paradiso are to the real thing. Paradiso was not rarefied air or a vacuum of darkness as Dante reached beyond the outermost of Primum Mobile to finally glimpse the orbit call Empyrean, reserved for the most exclusive club (called paradise) members like the blessed Mary and Abraham. Far from it, we find a universe bathed in Gods blinding rays of love emanating from the centre of the Empyrean (which encircles the Primum Mobile and all the other 9 orbits of paradiso). God's love represented by the ray of lights of the sun is the single force that holds the universe in perfect unchanging symmetry & balance, the future of mankind and the meaning of life and the universe. While Hawking may still be seeking his elusive "unifying theory" for the universe, Dante Alighieri has already revealed it to the world, nearly 900 years ago.

I read this for college a few years ago. Each book has its own imagery and ideas that are explored, getting more and more complicated as Dante travels on. Though for the Paradise it is less about striking images and more about the very conception of trying to imagine God. It's quite the experience.

I tried the free sample already suspicious because the description claims in different places to be the Mandelbaum translation and to be translated by Ciardi. The sample was neither but one of the old stilted translations available free from Gutenberg. Come on Amazon. You are famous already for abusing your employees. Some of us mores the pity overlook that because of great convenience for us. But this kind of error makes us want to wake up to the rest of your wrongs.

I have been grappling with Dante for many years and every time I turn back to the Divine Comedy I am once again hooked. I like this version because it is elegantly translated and has a modern touch that I find compelling (in comparison to Longfellow's, for example). I always prefer the translations that maintain rhyme and structure, although I have prose versions also for when I get confused. The introductions and summaries of each canto are minimal but helpful. I always use the on-line Shmoop commentaries that are much more detailed yet also light hearted and readable. If you studied the Inferno at college or high school .... I recommend completing the set. This version is a very good place to start.

I truly enjoy reading the classics. However some classics must be translated. Some translations loose meaning since you can not translate word for word. Only the meanings can be translated and with the evolving English language sometimes words can have skewed definitions. John Ciardi is the best Dante translator I have read. Signet has done a good job at this price point. The Devine comedy is a book set that will expand your understanding on many uncannonized ideas. The Inferno (Signet Classics)The Paradiso (Signet Classics)The Purgatorio (Signet Classics)

I love pleasure reading and while reading one of those books it was quoted in that book about Dante Alighieri, so I thought we would try it out. Love the thinking invlved in this book, the amazing way you dig deep into your being to relate, because we all can relate. Nice to be able to read literature and share with you.

Great purchase for readers

"The Purgatorio" was translated by the American poet, John Ciardi, and is accompanied by copious notes. If you want to plunge further into Dante you can, but it is by no means essental! I would give this ten stars if I could.
