Review
''There are many books available that offer new law students advice and strategies for success in law school. What makes this book so unique is the vantage point of its author: An intelligent, successful (recently graduated) law student writing a book for fellow law students, offering realistic insight, sound advice and tried and true strategies. The book is sensible, practical, comprehensive and . . . funny!'' --Joanne Harvest Koren, Director, Academic Achievement Program, University of Miami School of Law''These exam strategies allowed me to focus on mastering the most important elements of 1L exams. I saved tons of time and my grades drastically improved from the first semester to the second semester.'' --Jeff, 1L, University of Miami School of Law''Not only did Alex's techniques help me ace my exams, they also gave me confidence and significantly reduced my stress level during 1L year. A few years back, I was a 1L. I knew that I knew the material, but how to convince the examiners? Since I didn’t seem to be able to, I faced the, all too common dilemma, flunk out or drop out. So, I opted for the later. Alex Schimel’s great little book would have prevented that. I don’t just know that, I’m dead sure of it. As Alex points out, and what is a certainty, learning anything that will never, ever, appear on your exams is a total waste of time.Alex’s book is nothing new, books on how to take and pass law school exams, have been around as long as law schools themselves. And yes, at the time I was studying for my exams, I was also studying the four or five how to take law school exams books that I owned. The big problem with these: “how to†books, is that they are mostly authored by law professors or others who have only faint memories of their student days, while Alex recently graduated number one in his class and his approach is totally refreshing, as well as being the new "Gold Standard" for examinees. What does the acronym IRAC stand for, anyway?Classically, it's:I for Issue;R for Rule;A for Analysis, andC for Conclusion.According to Alex, and I concur, because I was an IRAC slave, if you think the IRAC principle is all you need to master your law exams, “Flunk now and avoid the rush.â€As Alex points out, and something that a lot of law students, can’t seem to get their heads around, because they keep on flunking, is the whole idea of exams is to get you thinking like a lawyer. What a concept! Let’s look at Alex’s sample hypothetical on the tort of assault:QUESTION“Drake was standing on the balcony of his second floor apartment. He lookeddown at Paul who was walking below in the parking lot. Drake yelled toPaul, “When I see you at the convention next Tuesday, I’m going to punchyour lights out.†As Drake yelled, he held a broomstick over his head.Paul felt scared and ran away. You are Paul’s attorney. Prepare a memo onthe likely outcome of the case.â€I won’t bore you with my answer that I emailed to him, but I will tell you that one of the things I admire about Alex is, he not only talks the talk but he walks the walk. By that, I mean, he didn’t just write a great little monograph on attaining the best grades possible in your law school exams, but in the true spirit of a great teacher, he makes himself accessible to his students. In the above question, Alex screams, “I want you to think like a lawyer.†To accomplish this he borrows from the Fourth Estate. We all know that every good newspaper article has the "Big Five": 1) who? 2) what? 3) where? 4) when? and 5) why?Let’s break Alex’s question down: He has his own way of setting up an answer but insists that the reader come up with their own method and use it every time and that's not only good, but necessary. At the end of the question he assigns you a role in the scenario. You are Paul’s attorney—the plaintiff. Classically, this is called the "call" of the question.Drake is the defendant, and at first glance, you think you can just plug in your IRAC template and that’s all there is to it.I assault.R necessary elements of assault.A using the basic elements, apply them to Drake’s words and actions to determine if they rise to the level of assault mandated by the rule.C finally, does Paul have a case against Drake?Nothing to it, right?“No!†Screams Alex, “that’s not near all.†And the really great news is that this is only a very small part of all of the exam wisdom contained in this great little book, that will be the best money you ever invested, if you only follow half of its teachings.Read this book, many times, practice, practice, and practice some more, the teachings within, and not only will you survive your law school exams but you will excel in them. It’s what I’m going to do.
This book pretty much saved my ass 1l. My legal writing professor bombarded us with busy work and failed to properly teach us IRAC, CRAC, or how to answer an exam question. I'll never forget what this book taught me: issue, rule, analysis, however, nevertheless. It is a real good format for exam answers, it incorporates the counter argument and helps to balance everything. Definitely an easy read. Without a doubt worth the hour you spend reading it. Definitely helped me more than anything else out there, very basic and to the point. You are doing yourself a disservice by not reading this.
Best book I read in all of law school. It is a very quick read. Great advice on how to study and write exams. I used the tips on the bar also. I cannot recommend this book enough. I went from B's to the Dean's list and I think it was mostly because I followed the advice in this book. I read other law school exam strategy books and they were all trash and long reads. This can be read in an about an hour.
This book should be read by all law students, and soon-to-be-law students. It is an easy read and quickly gets to the point. I wish I would have read it sooner.
Good advice on taking a law school exam
Well written, quick read. Good points made.
Excellent information , only 100 pages, which is great for an extremely busy law student who is already reading a crazy amount.Relevant, because the author is a fairly recent law school grad.I have read LEEWS, Getting To Maybe, and others, Schimel's book has been the most helpful for me!
Great book for first year law students.Helped me quite a bit.Highly recommend
