From the Back Cover

From her more than three hundred appearances for film and television, stage and cabaret, performing comedy or drama, as an unforgettable lead or a scene-stealing supporting character, Jenifer Lewis has established herself as one of the most respected, admired, talented, and versatile entertainers working today. This “Mega Diva” and costar of the hit sitcom black-ish bares her soul in this touching and poignant—and at times side-splittingly hilarious—memoir of a Midwestern girl with a dream, whose journey took her from poverty to the big screen, and along the way earned her many accolades. With candor and warmth, Jenifer Lewis reveals the heart of a woman who lives life to the fullest. This multitalented “force of nature” landed her first Broadway role within eleven days of her graduation from college and later earned the title “Reigning Queen of High-Camp Cabaret.”In the audaciously honest voice that her fans adore, Jenifer describes her transition to Hollywood, with guest roles on hits like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Friends. Her movie Jackie’s Back! became a cult favorite, and as the “Mama” to characters portrayed by Whitney Houston, Tupac Shakur, Taraji P. Henson, and many more, Jenifer cemented her status as the “Mother of Black Hollywood.”When an undiagnosed mental illness stymies Jenifer’s career, culminating in a breakdown while filming The Temptations, her quest for wholeness becomes a harrowing and inspiring tale, including revelations of bipolar disorder.Written with no-holds-barred honesty and illustrated with more than forty color photographs, this gripping memoir is filled with insights gained through a unique life that offers a universal message: “Love yourself so that love will not be a stranger when it comes.”

It has been years since I have read a non-work related book and actually finished it. Let alone finished it in 3 days. To say this book was good would be an understatement. Ms.Lewis' (Dr. Lewis) journey through her career, mental illness, love, and just life is one of great strength, determination and conviction. As a LPC (therapist), I appreciate the raw honesty about living with Bipolar Disorder. It is a hard road to travel and her journey is a motivation for many. Her stories of growing up in Kinloch, traveling the world, following her dream, and perfecting her craft ignited every emotion within me. I literally did not want to stop reading. My heart sank as she named all of the loves and people that died in her life. I rejoiced when something good happened or she made another self-discovery. I'm going to stop here before I give away too many details. My point is that this is a book I would recommend (already have) to my friend, family, and clients. To anyone reading my review, don't second guess this purchase. Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Miss Jenifer Lewis is here and can't nobody do a darn thing about it. Refreshing, honest and so very Jenifer Lewis. She will have you giggling right from the get go. Been waiting on this for a while. Loved your mentions of my favorite Dominican foods! Made this Dominican boy smile, Get it mama!

If you’re into the Broadway scene in ANY way, you’ll likely enjoy this very candid, extremely witty, offering by the “Mother of Black Hollywood”.Jenifer Lewis spends a majority of the time detailing the Broadway and off-Broadway plays and shows she’s been blessed to display her talents. And when she’s not doing that, she’s speaking about her personal struggles with her Bipolar Disorder.I am a fan of Ms. Lewis, and would highly recommend enjoying this title via audio, if you have access to it, because listening to this in her voice is a must.

This book is refreshingly honest and pulls no punches.I don't like watered down biographies. Jenifer doesn't shy away from anything. She's honest, funny, I understand about mental illnesses I have lived with depression, anxiety ,ADHD for years, I'm also manic.abuse of any kind is a major catalyst for mental illness.its how we choose to deal with it and if we seek treatment or not I went through similar situations with being promiscuous.we in the back community keep sexual abuse and mental illness a secret, turning a blunt eye to it.once sexual mental illness and sexual abuse is no longer a secret, then will healing begin and it wouldn't be stigmatized and people wouldn't feel ashamed

Ms. Lewis TELLS IT ALL! Oh, no doubt you will laugh. If you know Jenifer Lewis' ability as a TOP NOTCH comedienne, you know you're in for uproarious laughs in this book. But don't be fooled. Just like you would never want to make the mistake that this comedienne only knows how to make us laugh. Oh no! She's also a fine classically trained actress that can make you weep with the depth of her performance. So it is with this book of her life. It's not all laughs (but it's full of them and big ones). It's also full of struggles, lessons learned, pain and alway, always TRUTH. That's what you get in this book...TRUTH. She lets us in on her innermost thoughts and some of her most personal moments. She takes us for quite a ride. Yes, I'll say it..."fasten your seatbelts". But I won't finish that famous quote because it won't be a bumpy night you're in for, it will be the ride of a lifetime that you will be so glad you decided to take. beware people, she's not shy. Jenifer tells it all, from the men in her life, the successes in her life, to the heartaches in her life and the lessons learned from each of them. She is honest about her struggle with bipolar disorder and the havoc it wreaked in her early life and the journey to understanding it later in life through therapy and medication. We have a lot to learn from Jenifer Lewis. How lucky we are that we have someone this willing to open their colorful life to us. If all of our teachers had been this honest and this funny...we'd all be brilliant. She has had many monikers along the way, "killer", "dick diva", "the queen of high camp cabaret" (a tittle given to her by The NY Times), and "the black mother of Hollywood". She's all those things and a few more, most notably a STAR, a survivor, and by all means a real flesh and blood human being with a heart the size of the cities she's conquered. Do yourself a favor, after you read it, listen to it. You do not want to miss her inflections, her laugh and her power. Now go, enjoy your ride!

Reading this book is like having a conversation with Jenifer! Her discussion of her bi-polar situation is enlightening for me and would be for any of those who, like most, don't recognize the symptoms in themselves. Aside from that, She is a NATURAL HOOT! She writes like she normally speaks...and that's what I was counting on. Everyone should read this book. Its an enlightening and uplifting read! Thank you Jenifer! The added bonus is that while reading, quite unexpectedly, she mentions a very close friend of mine who was very active in the theater during the timeframe of that particular chapter. He had no idea until I called him up to tell him that he was mentioned in "MISS JENIFER'S book! Lol!

What to say? This book is freaking hilarious from beginning to end! There are so many quotes and anecdotes that Jenifer (with one F) shares to count. It will pull at your heart strings and at the same time make you want to cuss somebody out. If you are having as much sex or more than she did you might need to see a (Rachael)... The book is REAL, HEARTFELT & all that other sensitive s***. You will learn expletives (if you aren't familiar) and lessons on life, love, relationships, sex, death, etc...If you are a person who does not like to read then simply order the Amazon Audio Version and be prepared to shed tears of laughter.
