I bought this 3rd edition to replace my 2nd edition which finally split open from years of use. I know the official review says "significantly enhanced," but as far as I can tell, aside from an appendix with some small photos of casting, the content is the same. Many revised editions of textbooks have a foreword describing the revisions, but I could not find one in this book. I also found the print harder to read. I would recommend that you buy the 2nd edition if you can find a copy significantly cheaper in good condition.Would welcome any factual corrections and will edit my review accordingly.
I am a family doctor with a number of years in a semi-rural practice and more than my share of ER time. Fracture Management is a good, solid, conservative reference for it's intended audience. It will certainly keep you out of trouble. Due to it's brevity, there are a number of conditions that are missing, mostly less common problems, but sometimes the book does not cover the particular variant of the fracture you are seeing. Dislocations are largely not included. The photographs of x-rays are helpful when they are present, and I often show the patient the picture in the book as it often illustrates their fracture better than our sometimes crummy x-ray. Unfortunately, not all the photos clearly demonstrate what they aim to. For a more comprehensive, and much larger, text on fractures, with some additional attention to mechanisms of injury and very helpful sketches, I recommend Connolly's Fractures and Dislocations: Closed Management. Though it is getting pretty old in its current edition, the basics of how people get hurt and how to manage them non-operatively, haven't changed all that much. For a more broad based text on orthopedic care, with only brief attention to fractures, it's hard to go wrong with Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care.
This book lets me competently manage numerous types of fractures and includes what splints to use, what types of casts (although I tend to use short arm prefabricated reusable splints and the same in walking boots instead of short arm and short leg casts), XRay intervals, and when to refer to ortho.I use point-of-care online references like Essential Evidence Plus or DynaMed for my routine practice, but for fractures this is what I reach for. If they only made it as an iPhone app . . .
I refer to this book the most in clinic when I have abnormal XR results that I am not totally sure what to do with. It is always good to consult this book when you are in doubt. My other colleagues also use this book.
I'm a pain medicine doctor and also cover ER sometimes.I read about half of entire book. Sentence was written in concise style and easy to get,also chapter was well systemized so that you can read it very fast with no miss. 'Anatomic consideration' part that always appear first of each chapter is really brilliant and fascinating. Surely I'm already very familliar with musculoskeletal anatomy, but this book gives me additional something. Figures or illustrates inserted was painted faithfully. No coarsness. Image guality is excellent, too.'Indication of Orthopedic referral' part is maybe the pearl of this book and the reason many primary care doctor want this book. Yes, also this part was well made. Clearly, you can get to know in a min whether you should transfer a patient or not.'Treatment' part is enough to make you a competent and sincere doctor, although it takes no long time to read it upTreatment option is up to dated. For example writters know that ICNB or Epidural block is help ful in the case of rib fracture. And 'treatment of Spondylolysis' part makes it more reliable. (Some books are tend to be too sure about controversial facts)It's well made and recommandable but not huge. I mean that I think abundunt US or MRI images are out of this book.This book is based on plain image. Someone could feel something lacking cause these days US is spreading it's field in Muskuloskeletal diagnosis. I also love US, but look at the 'Bianchi book' ! I guess writter didn't want to weigh heavy pressure on your shoulder. This book should be fast, clear and concise.
I am working in ED fast track, almost half of the patient come with musculoskeletal problems, I have found this book to be essential for my practice.
I'm family medicine trained and have worked in primary care and urgent care.I was a fan of the first edition; it helped me decide which injuries to refer and helped me successfully manage others myself. I recommended it to others and bought the second edition, which gets used a lot in our clinic.So far, the third edition in kindle form looks good; it appears to be as user-friendly as the print version.
Again, this is an essential book, especially for the Family Practitioner just starting out. I have just graduated residency and am working alone at an Urgent Care Center, and I use this book almost every shift! Gives good, clear advice for managing the most common fractures encountered, and when (and more importantly, how quickly) to refer to ortho! Love It, worth every penny!
