This book has a lot of detail, however, assembled into a confusing order. It seems the author is a master of cut and paste, assembling other authors as shown with a lengthy bibliography and quotations. The writing style became tedious and confusing by the overuse of em dashes and convoluting sentences by trying to incorporate too much information. A better use of commas might have streamlined the writing. Historical data would have been more understandable if presented in a better chronological order. There is too much minutiae drawn out too extensively to the point being just clutter. Sentence structure is extremely poor and I found myself rereading a sentence and rewriting it to understand it better. It was a tedious read and I felt the author might have been wise to rely on a more expert editor. After reading it I decided it was a shambolic conglomeration with so much misinformation, I felt it a waste of time.

If you want to read a unbiased look into the Balkans' history, this book is for you. While concise, I thought that it was very well written and does a good job of summarizing the history of the region including Ottoman rule and how life was under such.Highly recommend for those who want to learn more about the region

For someone who's quite interested in the Balkans, I've started but failed to finish a distressing number of books on the topic. I though the problem is that the topic is too large for one book until I found Mark Mazower's The Balkans: A Concise History. In less than 250 pages Mazower covers not just the basics but the major issues as well. He also manages to upend a few long-held but factually unsupported beliefs.The outline is simple, first cover the land and the people, then life under the Ottoman Empire, then the struggles for "independence" (definitely a relative term in this instance) and finally the events of the 20th century. By the end I understood just how empty the concept of nationalism truly was in the Balkans in the 19th century, the roles of the Greek Orthodox Churches, the Austrian Empire and Russia, and the allure that fascism held for these newly emergent nations in the 1930s. That's a lot for 250 pages. That Mazower also manages to take on the myths of the "violent" Balkans and how swell it was to be a non-Muslim in the Ottoman Empire is truly impressive.Mazower isn't doing narrative history here. His focus is on themes so the events aren't related in a straightforward chronology. I found it easy enough to follow but if you prefer chronology to themes this book might not work for you. For me this one's a winner and I'm definitely going back for more Modern Library Chronicles and more about the Balkans.

This was a tough reading for such a little book. It is rather a long essay on many aspects of the complex subject, quoted well but left readers with only vaguer impressions. A simple chronology would probably serve better as "a short history".

The region known as the Balkans is the proverbial red-headed step-child of Europe. It has been looked upon as backwards, violent, and primitive by many in the Western world for some time. In recent years, the region has earned a reputation of violence, ethnic cleansing, and nationalistic strife. This compact little book set out to discern fact from myth concerning the history and people of the Balkans. It also outlines the crucial role the region has played not only in European, but in world history. One example of this is the region's role in the First World War. Not only was the war started in the Balkans-with the assasination of ArchDuke Ferdinand-it was also virtually ended there also-with the Bulgarian collapse of September 1918.The author debunks the myth that ethnic and religious differences alone are to blame for the current chaos in the region by pointing out that for hundreds of years, the many religions and ethnic groups of the region lived side by side in relative harmony. The now fragmented Balkans were once part of the Roman and Ottoman empires, and until relatively recent times, enjoyed a semblance of stability. It wasn't until the last century when nationalistic and ethnic ambitions surfaced,(with the encouragement of the Great Powers) that things turned ugly.In the epilogue, the author (somewhat repetitively) argues against the view of the Balkans as being inherently violent and chaotic. While his point is well-taken, this chapter comes across as more of an exercise in political correctness than anything else. Nevertheless, this is a solid overview of the the Balkans that I would definitely recommend as a starting point.

Dense with information but very readable, this book is a very helpful summary of the history of the Balkans from a variety of perspectives. The maps aren't very good, which is typical in your usual black and white paperback, but you can follow them well enough to get the idea. The detail is incredible and rich with names and details. More important to me was the arc of the history and the summaries of the forces behind events. The author writes with a spare but exact tone and infuses wry humor from time to time. Truly a good summary. Though written near the year 2000, I still found it very relevant in 2018 given the long history. This was a good complement to T. Jankowski's Eastern Europe! with its less formal and more matter of fact and fun tone.

What a great overview of this region. The explanation of how geography has effecting this region was extremely helpful. Well written and easy to understand. It's short but a quick way to get started on learning about eastern Europe.

It gives eye opening information about the Balkan history, very often unknown or neglected. It does not confirm the myths and easy truths about the Balkans, on the contrary, it goes deep and shows that the reality is more complicated than putting all the blame of the Balkans to the Ottoman empire. Not sure what all of the five-star reviewers saw or felt that I missed. This was a good beach book, one that passes the time pleasantly but leaves no lasting impact. It was interesting enough, given the strange and wretched life the main character has led, but none of her emotions ever seemed real, none of the atrocities that happened to her and that she committed were ever deeply explored, characterized, or layered into an evolving personality. She shifted from good to bad to evil to good without more thought than "I want to be a good person". Very very simplistic, as are all of her so-called relationships. She becomes immortal, well at least she was told she was, and this doesn't send her into some kind of existential crisis or self reflection? Weird.It was oddly hollow and bereft of any normal human emotions. Her best friend? A guy she meets once who gives her a place to live for 7 years. She never once communicates with him the entire time. Yet trusts him and goes off to find him. Her response? Hmm, maybe I should have written him a letter. You think?Ugh. So wooden, so one dimensional. So very sophomoric. Yet people seem to be in love with this book, so I must have missed something big.

This is one of those rare books that captures me from the very first moment. The first scene was all it took, and I was in love. I couldn't book this book down! And I was surprised by how much doubt I had while reading, hoping for the best, suspicious of the worst. The story has takes some unique turns that ultimately set this story up as an epic paranormal romance.*I don't want to give spoilers, but I do want to say if you're a fan of Jessica Jones, there are aspects of this story that will definitely appeal to you, character-wise*Okay, that said. It's REALLY hard to review this story with the details without giving spoilers, so I'll just give a quick overview of what I can, hopefully without giving any spoilers. Early on, we're introduced to what we believe to be the villains of the story, Eve's parents. I have to say this scene is pretty crucial to developing Eve's potential as a human being, because her dark turns later in the story would otherwise make her unlikable; instead, you root for her the whole way.Boaz comes along just in time to stop her parents from going too far in their torture of Eve (really gives child abuse a new meaning). He literally saves her life. After that, however, Eve becomes self-destructive and dark in her choices. Again, I don't want to give too many spoilers, but it really takes a lot for her to break away from because the more she uses magic, the darker she becomes.Along the way, I held out hope for things I should not have hoped for. Rachel McClellan did a fantastic job creating multifaceted heros. People who could be the hero one day, and the villain the next. Ultimately, this is a story about overcoming addictions (so isn't it ironic that I became addicted to reading it!) but it's not the kind of addictions you would think.It was nice to read something so dark and edgy while still seeing some value and meaning to the story. I can't wait for book two! Edit: I have since read book two an am now looking forward to book three!

Eve is the daughter of two evil and powerful magic users. Their hope was that their union would create, in Eve, a super evil magic user. But Eve is determined to deny the call of black magic. They raised her in isolation (she is rarely allowed even to watch television or get online), so it’s utterly unclear where her standards of good and evil have come from. The constant mental and physical abuse and the isolation should leave a heavy imprint on her personality, but – confusingly – they seem to have no impact on her mental, emotional, or moral development. It also doesn’t impact her social skills. When she meets Boaz, a powerful vampire who is a friend of her parents, she is swept off her feet and sees a chance to escape her unhappy life.This book felt really, really long to me. Part of it was that Eve’s character was so patently unrealistic that nothing felt real and I didn’t care what happened to her. She’s an extremely self-centered character, but her internal life is also very uninteresting. Her incessant self-pity isn’t enough to carry a reader into her world. The world of magic the author has created seems like it is pretty complex, but it’s not very well-explained. So we’re denied another entry point into the story.This book wasn’t particularly bad – just disconnected and inconsistent. By the time I had read hundreds of pages and reached the cliffhanger ending, I found I just didn’t care about Eve and her friends. I was ready to move on to something else.

This is my first book by this author and since I didn't know what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the story. I couldn't stop reading until I finished the book; the more into the story, the more mesmerizing. Cliffhanger, there's three more books.The Devil's Angel #2 - Intriguingly darker.A well written, fast paced suspense with more interesting characters with a twisting, intriguing plot. I am confused why such a powerful witch would weaken so much after using her magic. This is still a substantial series, unlike Twilight, more like The Dresden Files. I couldn't put this book down, either, and hated that it's a cliffhanger, two more books.A Hero's Death - Great Book! A well written, intriguing suspense with a well thought out plot and developed characters. This book reminds me a lot of the Dresden Files; no, the author wrote something completely different, but the way DF evolves into a continuous story. No, Ardis is not a witch/warlock, I grew up in time when females were the witches, but he's stronger than any human because of his father's genes. Hard to describe without doing spoilers. This book has substance, intelligence and immerses the reader into a twisting tale, full of vivid descriptions, that can't be put down until it's finished.

I picked up Dead Certain by Adam Mizner, partially because some of the pearl-clutching negative reviews on Amazon about how pornographic it is, how the writing was terrible, and how it was contrived and confusing. Since I’m a writer, I like to read across the spectrum to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t. I’m glad I decided to read this book, since it explained why it received largely positive reviews instead of negative.This is not a typical murder mystery, more of a whydunnit than whodunnit, which comes with pros and cons. I think this novel lends itself more to a character study than a mystery or thriller. The point of view character, Ella, is a district attorney who recently crossed enemy lines to work at her father’s prestigious criminal defense firm. Her true passion, however, is singing. Her little sister, Charlotte, is studying for her MFA in writing and has received news that her novel-in-progress is going to be published. Right after Charlotte shares this exciting news with her older sister, she mysteriously goes missing.The structure of the book can lend to some confusion; it functions somewhat as a frame story, beginning with Ella’s point of view and interspersed with segments from the novel Charlotte had written. As we come to find out, Charlotte draws largely from her life to fuel her fiction, and since she goes missing early on, the excerpts of her novel serve as her point of view. Halfway through the book, the narrative shifts again to include a third POV – that of the killer. Since these points of view are first-person, the shifting can prove to be a little off-putting and as the switching becomes more frequent, it can pull the reader out of the story for a moment to become oriented as to which character we are now following. I feel, personally, that it may have served the narrative better to portray Ella and the killer’s points of view from the third person, but I suspect the author might have felt that the first person accounts paralleled Charlotte’s novel better, so I understand why he chose to use first-person across the board.Since the book favors characters over the mystery, I felt that they were well fleshed out and interesting. We get a lot of insight into Ella, who is a seemingly strong woman but carries a lot of self-doubt and regret for the choices she has made in her life. Charlotte isn’t quite as fleshed out. Like the protagonist in her novel, we find out that Charlotte has been having an affair with three different men, and while that serves for some interesting conflict, we never really learn why Charlotte made the choices she did, or why she carried on with all three men. I feel like the use of her novel could have served to flesh out her own psychology a little bit more. Once the killer is revealed and we get his point of view, I found that there was a lack of any facet of him that was particularly sinister or interesting. His reveal was surprising, but I don’t know if dedicating as much of the book to his point of view was worth it. His point of view just wasn’t as interesting as Ella or Charlotte’s.Like others, I also had suspected who the killer was relatively quickly, although I was pleasantly surprised to find I was correct. I have never been a fan of mystery books who throw in showdown with a random killer into the last few pages; I would much rather have the opportunity to guess who the killer is based on the characters and suspects that have been introduced. As I mentioned, I feel like this story was much more about the lives of all the characters wrapped up in this horrible event and what led them to make the choices they did, and less about the mystery itself.The author relied on a lot of contrived devices to draw the killer and Ella together, ones that, as I mentioned, weren’t really fleshed out in his side of the story. Ella also jumped to several conclusions throughout the story, such as assuming her sister was dead after she had been missing for about a day (it just seemed like a sudden jump for her to make, even if the reader knew it was the case). She seems to heavily rely on Charlotte’s unpublished manuscript to drive the investigation, even though she knows Charlotte often makes changes to her stories to hide who the characters are based on. For example, Charlotte is a writer and her boyfriend is an actor, while in the book, she is an actress and her boyfriend is a painter. However, Ella immediately assumes since the fictional lovers are a college student and a banker, their real-life counterparts would be as well. Ella is the one that seems up to mostly come up with new information and leads based purely on Charlotte’s novel and never experiences any pushback from investigators. At one point, Ella confronts one of the suspects and pulls a knife on him before running away. For a respected, established lawyer, she doesn’t seem to meet any resistance at any point of some of her irrational behavior.That said, one thing that was strong in this book was the fact that the author clearly knows the legal and law enforcement system. Mr Mizner is a lawyer, and it was kind of refreshing to have a more accurate outlook on the investigations taking place in the story.While there is some sex in the book, I didn’t find it obscene or unnecessary. There are only a few sex scenes and while they are a bit provocative, they aren’t pornographic. I guess if you are terrified of female sexuality you might want to avoid this book, but since the basis of the investigation is wrapped up in Charlotte’s (terrible) relationship choices, it wasn’t unwarranted. Ella is also involved in a bit of a love triangle which I felt was a little more out of place. While, from the perspective of a human being, I can understand why she would reach out for companionship during that time, I would have liked a little more insight into why she chose the company she did, as opposed to seeking out the support of established friends or female friends, although their absence in the book seems to imply she doesn’t have any. One of her potential beaus could have also served to have been present more to better explain their relationship, both past and present, and its progression.All and all, I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, which I don’t think should be insulting. I read it in two sittings and found myself invested in Ella, her father, and in finding out what happened to Charlotte. I personally wish the author would have spent less time fleshing out the lackluster killer and put more into fleshing out Ella and other characters, and giving us a better array of interesting protagonists. I would have liked to have met other friends of Ella’s, or seen the police officer on Charlotte’s case be more involved, and I would have liked to have been strung along a little longer on who the killer might be and had the reveal take place later in the book. From a mystery or thriller standpoint, this book was okay. But when it comes to the characters, I felt like, for its faults, the author created two interesting, dynamic characters, and I found myself experiencing Ella’s grief along with her. The book is not just about the relationship between sisters but also about the secrets we keep from each other, no matter how close we are to another person, and the writer ties in that theme very well throughout the book. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick read who wants a story with a lot of character and a little mystery.

I got this book free through my Prime membership, and like several other reviewers, really wish I could have the few hours of my life back that I spent reading it. The dual identity of the main character is a one-off contrivance, the plot progresses almost entirely through conversation and personal reflection instead of action, and after the half-way point, where the killer's viewpoint starts to be inserted, it got really boring. None of the characters were fleshed out enough for me to root for any of them.

The book inside of a book idea is unusual but I think that the author pulled it off. The beginning of the book, when the author was going between Charlotte's book and Ella's perspective was enjoyable. But half way through when the author switches between the killer's and Ella's perspective and Charlotte's book, it becomes boring. A lot of the scenes are repeated, some of them nearly word for word. There's no mystery anymore. I think that Adam Mitzner doesn't really understand women and needs to learn more about what makes women tick. I couldn't believe at the end when he described how much Charlotte's would be missed, what an angel she was, when the whole story was based on the fact that she was cheating on 3 guys at the same time.I more or less forced myself to finish the book. All in all, I was disappointed.

This was a freebie from Amazon Prime so I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. I read it in one sitting. I did figure out who the killer was before it was revealed but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book.

I got this on the Kindle first looks program, and I'm glad I didn't follow any of the reviews of this. If I had, I would've missed out on a pretty decent thriller. There needs to be a disclaimer about Ella, this has nothing at all to do with her double life, and it's only mentioned once in the book and it's a moment that makes no sense, but then later it does. The main thing to remember here, is it's a novel that really fits into the current trend of fiction. There's a dark undercurrent running just below the surface, and what I liked most was just how effective Mitzner was able to keep the momentum of the story going while keeping me guessing as to who was responsible for Charlotte's dissappearance. I love books that are layered with different angles. As a reader, I like it when an author attempts to try something different and succeedes. Dead Certain seems like a simple novel, but everyone here has a secret, that's the main theme of the book. Charlotte is having an affair with three men, and one of those men has done something horrible. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Mitzner is a decent story teller who knows how to keep you engaged. He effectively places Charlotte's unfinished manuscript in as a plot device and it's an effective bit of story telling that adds to the mystery, The main question here, is what happened to Charlotte? The characters here are merely there to keep the story moving, and sometimes, you really don't get to know them enough to care about them, but that's the point. It's the story itself that captured my attention. That's what's important. The only complaint I have is the ending. It felt rushed, and I wish the viewpoint of the guy responsible for Charlotte's disappearance came sooner. He added a dark, twisted arc to the story and I loved every second of it. There's a lot here that could have made the story more powerful, and yes even darker. Aside from that, I found Dead Certain to be a decent thriller, and exactly the type of book I enjoy. When it comes to fiction I always find myself drawn to the darker stuff that adds elements to make it interesting, and fresh. This is one of those books you simply don't read, you devour it.
