One of the better books I've read on parenting. Talks mainly about developing character (the virtues: faith, love, charity, temperance, prudence, fortitude, etc) and gives specific examples for what kind of rules should be set, as well as what consequences for disobedience should be. This author has some short articles available on his website which ultimately led to me getting this book and others by him. It would be a great gift for parents to be or parents with young children (this is a Catholic book). I gave it four stars though primarily because it is slightly repetitive, especially if you have this authors other books, and I thought the author could have expanded more on specific topics with regards to religion. But otherwise an insightful book that provides an accurate description of the problems with modern parenting techniques and the resultant children they produce.

I found it very helpful. We used this book for our Lenten group weekly meetings. I do wish there was a list of expectations and appropriate consequences for certain ages. A bit of a guideline for the average progression in the daily raising of children would prove helpful.
Jim Stenson's principles are reliable because of his empirical method and his forthrightness about his premises and goals. I have read this book five times over our 20+ years of parenting 9 children, and it has been a sure guide. Invaluable.
This book has many practical ideas for instructing yourself and your children in virtues. Stenson has many examples from real families that use a variety of methods to teach there children self-control, discipline, charity, justice... virtues that are important for anyone to strive for. It was an easy read with lots of great information & ideas. It has some Catholic content but could be used by anyone for good ideas for instilling virtue in your children.
This is a lovely little book for parents. I am actually looking for something much more concrete to let parents know when and how to begin to teach their children about God and how to pray and live.
I am a young father of two little girls. This book was perfect for me. It's challenging and made me want to improve my own character to better serve as a model for my children. An important point Stenson makes is that a parents' personal example speaks infinitely more than their words. This book was also great in that its author is a faithful Catholic and he draws upon the Seven Cardinal virtues for fashioning character. I will re-read this valuable book.
