Needed it for school

While you will learn all you need for the "written" test ( it's actually on computer), the bookdoesn't help to give you a heads up on the Skills test, taken the same day. A listing of all thesteps involved in each one, with a list of supplies needed for each would have been good.There is a CD that comes with the text that purportedly has such but the audio/visual partleaves out a lot and I found myself printing out the text for each skill from the CD. I took asix-week intensive course with only five weeks of classes (M - TH), only half of which dealtwith the skills. Ten classes, three hours each, with eight other students to learn all the 22skills was just not enough time to get the practice necessary and while my test is still morethan 3 weeks away I feel shaky on the Skills. Six days of practicum at a hospital was somewhathelpful, but the practice there while basically the same, was different enough from what thestate test calls for as to confuse and frustrate this student. Again, the text is good as far as itgoes but should give fair warning ( and advice) on the, to my mind, more important issue ofpreparing for the practice (skills): eg. schedule study sessions with your fellow students, allwhose phone numbers you have, using the classroom on campus (with permission and availabilitysecured) to practice the skills!

The book is great! The only reason I'm giving the workbook 3 stars is because the person who made the workbook did not think ahead of time and made all the pages printed on front and back. So when you go to turn in a chapter for instance chapter 1..the first page of chapter two will be in the back of chapter 1s last page. It's a problem when you have to turn these pages in because then you're missing pages from certain chapters.

I love that it came with so many guideline pages, it provides a great foundation to practice on. The different exercises don't just teach you the method, but they are great for training the creative thought process used in creating your own designs.

It’s a very useful book to draw a mandala. It has a prepared grid with circles page in each mandala so you can draw it easily. I look forward to drawing all 20 mandalas! Thank you for authors.

In the circle of friends I grew up with, being called witty was about the highest praise one could receive. We never bothered to define the term precisely, but rather understood that it implied a degree of cleverness and facility with language that went well beyond just being funny. So, what exactly is wit, how does it work, and why does being considered witty matter so much to us? Those are precisely the questions that James Geary attempts to answer in Wit’s End, his exhaustingly researched and frequently engaging treatise on just about every imaginable aspect of the topic.At the simplest level, the author explains that wit can be regarded as a kind of metaphor: two disparate concepts connected by a commonality in sight, sound, or thought are combined for an incongruously comedic effect. Take puns, for example, such as the title of the 1970s rock album ‘You Can Tune a Piano but You Can’t Tuna Fish’. (Incidentally, this is not one of the dozens of puns that Geary cites, but it has been a personal favorite for a long time now.) The book then expands on this basic theme with chapters detailing how wit can be found in everything from literary fiction to fine art to popular music to religious tracts to political discourse.It deserves mention that the author himself is very clever in how he presents this analysis—the chapter on witty verbal banter is written as the script for a stage play, he offers the section on how wit works on the brain as a scientific research paper, visual wit is treated as an art history lecture, and so on. That structure, along with the thorough way in which the subject is documented across time and tradition, is what I found to be most compelling about Wit’s End. On the other hand, I also caught myself wondering at times in my reading whether this was really too narrow of a topic to justify a volume-length treatment. I am not sure that question was ever resolved, but I did come away from the experience both amused and enlightened.

Fun, unexpected, and at times, dizzying, Wit's End is a clever collection of expressions and explanations of wit. Thematic coherence may not be its strong suit, but for a quick blitz of ideas and thought on the topic it is a good read. It even tackles neuroscience. Although the locus of wit is surely in the brain, its anatomic parsing in this book falls a bit short of shedding light on the concept--but the attempt is appreciated. Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists has a bit more room for the reader than Wit's End, but in both there is something for everyone, and for simple showmanship this wins out.

If you appreciate the clever use of words you'll love this gem. I learned two things.... first, that I may have a good sense of humor but I, alas, am far from being witty. Second, I found out why cannibals don't eat clowns.

The book mixes academic examinations of the subject (neuroscience, psychology, history, etc.) with illuminating examples that range from hilarious to devilishly clever. The puns alone are worth the read. And I particularly enjoyed the examples of jive talk. An enjoyable read that both enlightens and tickles.

I thought it would be wittily written but is ponderously written making the reader dig out humor along with the author’s mainly uninteresting writing! I hoped for fun and got a turpid text I won’t recommend to anyone! Sad.

The review that I read that recommended this book went into great detail of a very minor part of the narrative. Basically this book offers very little insight into "WIT" but a lot into the authors' background; and that is nothing special.

The book was interesting from a historical point of view and I learned some new things about wit. The author really tried to fill out the book and repeated ideas a little too much. Could have been a good article instead.

Creatively written; lots of nice quotable thoughts; mostly an easy read. Touched on the topic of wit with lightness, creativity and brevity, but I was hoping for a bit more insight and/or rigor. But overall, meh.

This book is for S/W engineers or students who want to learn SSL and/or use OpenSSL to integrate SSL into their apps.That OpenSSL book (Network Security with OpenSSL) doesn't work. It cannot even explain OpenSSL APIs well enough, not to mention SSL. I mean, that book tells you to call API foo() first and then bar() next. But it doesn't tell you why. Given so many complicated data structures and APIs involved, you'd be stuck immediately if you want to do something not covered in the book.But this book shows you all the real world details about SSL, and how to implement an SSL library. The structure of those SSL APIs implemented is similar to OpenSSL. Concepts involved are the same. From this book, you can learn how those concepts and algorithms are pieced together. That's why you'll know how to use OpenSSL after reading this book.I find the notes on some SSL history across the book are also very useful. These facts are hard to find, and usually not mentioned in formal documents. It helps you understand why SSL works like this today.Salute to the author !

As a networking professional, I've long known of many SSL and TLS terms and concepts, but had little idea of how these all fit together. This was the perfect book for me.The book does a nice job of laying out each of the capabilities that TLS needs to do its job, explains terms, and gets into the details of how things work. Davies includes it all of the C code to implement TLS, so if the text is ever unclear you can refer to the code to understand exactly what he means. His writing is good enough that I rarely had to do this.If you are interested in cryptographic theory, the math of why an encryption algorithm works the way it does, this is not the book for you. Otherwise, this is an excellent primer and reference on all the key concepts on TLS. I'm hopeful Davies will publish a revised edition when TLS 1.3 is finalized in the next year or two.

I was forced to deal with a TLS system at work (not really my thing) and the book was invaluable in figuring out how things are supposed to work. This is hard stuff and the combination of theory, explanations and code gives you plenty of levels to approach it. This is one of those rare books that should be on your shelf as a reference.

This book explains a very complex topic (SSL) in a clear, step-by-step fashion.As well as examining the cryptographic protocols themselves, the author explains the background reasons and history behind their design. He isn't afraid to get into the complex details, but he always stays focused on what's important: designing and implementing SSL. When explaining elliptic curve cryptography, for example, he briefly summarizes the esoteric maths that underlie it - enough to wet your appetite, if you're interested in that kind of thing - but then concentrates on how to actually implement ECC in code.The author's writing style is friendly, informal and very readable. Even the grammar is near-flawless.The author provides clear, well-thought-out sample code for everything - right there in the book. No having to download code from a broken link!

Amazing, this has what is going on in SSL in simple English, but with the details, not just the names of the algorithms. A gold mine of useful information on how to write the algorithms, as well as sample code in C.Well researched and authoritative. I wish specifications were written this clearly.

An update would be nice, but it's still a painless way to ease into TLS. Of course you'll have to read the RFCs too.

This book walks through all aspects of creating a working SSL/TLS solution with plenty of example code in C. The cryptography chapters along with code you can read and run make it an excellent source for programmers to learn how encryption works, with enough of the math to understand the theory. I've read many books and papers in this subject area and this is the one book that I keep coming back to.

What more would an earnest programmer and knowledge seeker want more than a book that bridges the gap between good theoretical knowledge and programming and implementation detail with fully documented C source code.Do not hesitate to buy this well written book.

This book could be subtitled, "1001 Bargello Surprises," the author teaches the reader all about bargello as geometrics, undulations, florals, feathers, Celtic knots, waves, ribbons, ropes, circles, and pieces that just seem to grow. There are lots of color pictures with lots of color combinations and suggestions. She also has thrown in photos and charming anecdotes that don't seem to relate to the book. That's nitpicking, but, if you ever read this book, you ought to know that you weren't the only one scratching your head after searching the book for ferns, paisleys, and paperweight designs.
