Grade 5-9. This autobiography details the author's experiences as a teenager during the Cultural Revolution. Though wanting to be devoted followers of Chairman Mao, Jiang and her family are subjected to many indignities because her grandfather was once a landlord. Memoirs of the period are usually larded with murders, suicides, mass brainwashing, cruel and unusual bullying, and injustices. Red Scarf Girl is no exception. Where Jiang scores over her comrades is in her lack of self-pity, her naive candor, and the vividness of her writing. The usual catalogue of atrocities is filtered through the sensibility of a young woman trying to comprehend the events going on around her. Readers watch her grow from a follower into a thoughtful person who privately questions the dictates of the powers that be. She witnesses neighbors being beaten to death, her best friend's grandmother's suicide, the systematic degradation of her father, and endless public humiliations. At one point, Jiang even enters a police station to change her name in a confused attempt to dissociate herself from her branded and maligned family. She makes it very clear that the atrocities were the inevitable result of the confusion and fanaticism manipulated by unscrupulous leaders for their own petty ends. Ultimately, her resigned philosophy attaches no blame: this is what happens when power is grossly abused. The writing style is lively and the events often have a heart-pounding quality about them. A child's nightmare unfolds in Jiang's chronicle of the excesses of Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution in China in the late 1960s. She was a young teenager at the height of the fervor, when children rose up against their parents, students against teachers, and neighbor against neighbor in an orgy of doublespeak, name-calling, and worse. Intelligence was suspect, and everyone was exhorted to root out the ``Four Olds''--old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits. She tells how it felt to burn family photographs and treasured heirlooms so they would not be used as evidence of their failure to repudiate a ``black''--i.e., land-owning--past. In the name of the revolution, homes were searched and possessions taken or destroyed, her father imprisoned, and her mother's health imperiled--until the next round of revolutionaries came in and reversed many of the dicta of the last. This is NOT a book about the "big picture" of what happened in Communist China during the Cultural Revolution. Rather, it is a memoir of the lives of a young girl and her family and her friends' families. For the Chinese people, society's rules about what is good and bad were reversed, first when the Communists conquered China in 1949, and then the reversal was emphasized seventeen years later, when the Cultural Revolution began. The result was that families who, before Communism, had worked hard and intelligently and had prospered suddenly became national enemies. Even those who had chosen not to flee China, out of a strong sense of Chinese patriotism, like the author's parents and grandparents, were declared by the state to be "enemies of the people". Even worse, no way was allowed for such a family to "make up" for its past, and even the children who were born into Communism, like the author and her siblings and friends, were declared to be guilty of the "crimes" of their ancestors. For the author, the Cultural Revolution was a turning point in her life. Until then, her parents and grandmother had kept their heads down and been left alone, but now they were denounced and actively persecuted. What the author was seeing daily in her life conflicted with the propaganda she was getting at school, which, before, she had accepted without question. Now her confusion kept increasing, as she tried to make sense of her new world. Finally, she was told bluntly that she had to choose between her country and her family, and only if she publicly rejected her family could she have the life she had always expected to have. Of course this was an agonizing decision, and took much time, but she finally made her choice.The book is well-written, and does an excellent job of showing life in this tumultuous time as seen by a highly intelligent girl who was only twelve years old when the Cultural Revolution began. I highly recommend it.

China’s Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s was hugely disruptive, and is now universally recognized as a giant step backwards for China. This is an intimate personal memoir about the life and impressions of a young teenage girl who lived through that time. This is not just a general history of events. The author shares her feelings, fears, and concerns and those of her extended family. The story is well and simply told from a personal perspective and is an easy narrative to follow, but it ends somewhat incomplete.Ji-Li is growing up in a typical (for Chinese society) extended family, all sharing one household—the author and her two sisters, her parents, and her grandmother. At the beginning of the story, her family seems secure if not well-off, but their fortunes fall as the sometimes-anarchic “revolution” progresses. Although her father has a relatively uncontroversial occupation, every member of the family has been classified as a Landlord, simply because the family’s grandfather once owned property. The Cultural Revolution has labeled all people in the Landlord class as Enemies of the People, even though “landlords” as such are extinct in modern Communist China. Acquiring property to build family wealth has a long tradition in Asia, so the number of people with ancestors who owned property is obviously considerable.Asian culture is by tradition family-centered. In some countries (North Korea comes to mind as one of the more severe modern examples), the punishments for one person’s “transgressions” are visited on the entire family, often for several generations. These transgressions are sometimes purely political. Even if being a “landlord” was ever a crime, Ji-Li had nothing to do with it. Yet despite the fact that Ji-Li is smart, hard-working in school, and ambitious, she suffers personal humiliations and penalties simply because she is part of this family.Ji-Li is not anti-government, and wants to be a part of Mao’s revolution, but it won’t let her unless she is ultimately willing to make a difficult choice. Ji-Li’s fortitude almost fails her a few times, but in general she remains optimistic and determined. She is remarkably steadfast for such a young person. The story ends on a positive but mixed note, and it is clear that her experiences are not over yet.Although I am an older adult and found that this easily held my interest, I also think this is definitely appropriate, interesting, and accessible reading for even young teens.

"Red Scarf Girl" by Ji-li Jiang ... 4-starsI'll be honest... I wanted to give this a five-star rating, but the writing itself was just not up to that caliber. It was, however, an interesting and informative story of Chinese families enduring the harsh conditions of the Mao Revolution in China. It's also a very interesting and informative human history of how easily people can be 'brainwashed' into believing half-truths and lies.This story reminds me a little of another similar story, "The Plum Tree" set in Germany before and during Nazi Germany and war. Many normal, peace-loving Germans were also 'brainwashed' by Hitler and his henchmen. Humans can be so easily turned, one group against another - it's happened so many times in our past history, and it'll be done again and again in our future. Sad, truly sad.Patrick

I recently took up piano again after finishing grade 4 as a child. I started with the Martha Meier jazz books, which are fun, but nobody ever heard of her songs. Then I wanted some real jazz, so I bought this. I would say these are playable if you finished grade 4, though you are definitely going to need to practice a lot. He regularly uses four note chords in the melody and octaves and arpeggios in the left hand. They sound great, although there is a rare note here and there that I wonder if it is a misprint.One thing which I really appreciate is that the book has notes that these old eyes can see, with only 4 or 5 double staffs per page. The books which try to fit in 6 or 7 double staffs are just impossible for me to read any more. This book is also the size of most lesson books, and not the size of a sheet of typing paper like some piano books.My main concern with this book are the 10 note spreads in the left hand on "Ain't Misbehaving". I imagine the majority of female piano players are physically incapable of this. The piece really sounds lush until I get to that part, where it all breaks down. In the past, I have gotten around this in other pieces by making it an arpeggio or playing the upper note of the left hand chord with my right thumb. However, in this case I need my right hand to be playing a chord higher up. Also, I don't have time to arpeggio it while playing eighth notes in the right hand. If anybody has a solution for those of us who can only span an octave, I would appreciate your advice !

This set of favorite jazz pieces is definitely for the high intermediate to advanced pianist, so folks with less skill will find this book something very interesting to work on.I found the harmony and chord progression arranged by Tom Roed to be especially interesting, giving each piece a unique quality that is reminiscent of the sound you get from a good recording of earlier pianists striving to give a Duke Ellington feel in a nice cocktail lounge. I purposely set my keyboard (Korg SV1 88) to an edgy Thelonious Monk-type piano from his earlier recordings. It has a slightly 'woody' with an old upright piano sound that seems to enhance these great melodies in the book: Ain't Misbehavin' Don't Get Around Much Anymore Georgia On My Mind Killing Me Softly With His Song Linus and Lucy Mood Indigo On Green Dolphin Street Over The Rainbow Ribbon In The Sky The Shadow of Your Smile Take Five Taking A Chance On Love The Windmills Of Your Mind You Are The Sunshine Of My Life You Stepped Out Of A DreamNone of the pieces were what I expected. All were delightful, different, and pleasant and each had a unique flavor that I find hard to describe without simply referring you to the sheet music to see for yourself. I think this book is an important set of music that will give you a new approach to oldies that you once thought were poured in a concrete typeset.This is fine edition and I recommend it even if you have a dozen other copies of these titles. This IS different and charming.

I bought this book because many of the titles appealed to me. I would say that I am somewhere between intermediate and advanced level on piano. The arrangements in this book are very chord based....what I refer to as "rhythm piano" style. There are not very many (if any) single note melodic lines in the music, instead the melody is buried into the chords, which make it sort of a chore to play and really sort of monotonous on top of that. Of course, this is just my opinion. These arrangements are the author's interpretation of the songs, not note for note transcriptions, so to rate it as good or bad, is just an opinion. I hate to give it 3 stars but it isn't worth 4 stars in my opinion, because I am a player that likes to play songs with note for note accuracy. If you are like me, you probably will not be happy with the book, but if you are a beginner or intermediate player and learning chords, this book may appeal to you!

I'll buy most anything with Tom Roed's name on the cover! He is a master of harmony, creating a lush sound that is still simple enough for an intermediate pianist with a little patience to master. This book is my new favorite. Because my musical roots date back to the simple harmonies of the late '50s and early 60's, Roed's choice of complex harmonies are a challenge to my ears (and my fingers!). From the sophisticated ooze of a smooth "Ain't Misbehavin'," to a lovely "Somewhere over the Rainbow," to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," there's really something here for almost everyone. Tempo and dynamics are clearly marked for those of us unfamiliar with the originals. You might even make friends with music from an era completely outside your comfort zone.

As a pianist who loves jazz and blues, but never learned to improvise very well (I have great sight-reading skills, though, so it all evens out), this is a fun book to play out of! It's intermediate to advanced, so not for the faint of heart.

my wife brought this to her piano teacher, who knew Tom Roed's work. The teacher thought it would be challenging for her. The arrangements have rich chords that are interesting. "The Windmills of your Mind" is the piece she is working on now. There are 15 piano solos including "Over the Rainbow," "Take Five," "On Green Dolphin Street," and "Linus and Lucy." All of the arrangements require some skill and much practice, but it definitely makes a great addition to or beginning for anyone interested in jazz. The price is very reasonable, making it less than $1 for one piano solo arrangement. Buy it if you are serious.

Great variety. I wish it were a higher level but this is great for people to easily pick up and play something on the fly.

Expect higher intermediate level to advanced rather than moving into intermediate level. This is a great book to get if you love jazz and are getting ready to move into advanced technique.

This is a serious piece of scholarship and clearly shows the spiritual aspects inherent to the game for Native American/First Nation Peoples. I haven't finished the book yet, but I've only read one story, so far, that relates American Indian lacrosse to war. I was expecting something along the lines of stories similar to those that come out of Ireland regarding ancient hurling matches, held before major battles, where legend has it that more players died in the hurling match than in battle.

Got this for my daughter when she played lacrosse in High School. She seemed to take in the history of the sport and also accepted its violent nature more easily...

I ordered this book for a gift for my son who plays lacrosse. It does not have as many pictures as I would have liked and the text is a bit dry but it appears to be thorough. The book was new and arrived well packed and on time.

Every year, it seems as though Lacrosse is growing in popularity. With great enthusiasm, new teams are being added at every level. We are truly living in a Golden Age of Lacrosse. Yet, the game seems to be increasingly divorced from its Native American roots. "American Indian Lacrosse" is an essential book for all those are interested in learning where this Pre-Columbian game came from.Thomas Vennum is a anthropologist based out of the Center for Folklife Programs at the Smithsonian Institute. Vennum has carefully mined both the historical texts and the more recent ethnographies to assemble the most complete story to date of Native American Lacrosse. He examines such important topics as Lacrosse and Indian spirituality and its historic role in warfare and diplomacy. "American Indian Lacroose" is a well written book, dense with historic and anthropological detail. It is a must read for people who want to understand the origins of the game they love.

I can't say enough good things about this book! I picked it up while at a book sale and immediately had to have it. It's full of photographs of American Indian teams and tells you the full story of Lacrosse/baggataway and you get so much more--it's an in-depth look at how it affected the peoples and tidbits about their daily lives. Interspersed between each chapter are short 'stories' about lacrosse events.This is a great book, and a wealth of information. It's about more than just lacrosse. Don't hesitate to get this!

He dug deep into archives, personal papers, professional journals, and hundreds of hours of interviews to piece together the puzzle of the events that led up to the explosion that destroyed Reactor Number Four at Chernobyl.The author offers, as well, background into the flaws in the design of the RBMK graphite-moderated boiler water reactor. He examines the corrupt and labyrinthine system of managing nuclear power in the USSR. While this is a superb work of journalism, it also holds the intrigue of a murder mystery. Who really was responsible? What really happened? Was it design error or operator error? The official guide proceeded to give this UN group a speech about the wonderful safety history of Soviet nuclear power. "Of course, there was this one small incident that the world tries to blow out of proportion," At that time, one of the remaining reactors was still functioning, ,and we were taken to the control room, mere yards from the notorious sarcophagus that had been built to bury the debris of the core of Reactor Number Four. The engineers operating the plant were smoking, and ashes from their cigarettes fell onto the dials of the instruments that told them the status of the reactor and the turbines. It was clear that not many safety lessons had been learned from the worst nuclear accident in history.This is a story with many villains and some remarkable heroes. Add to the list of heroes Mr. Higginbotham, whose yeoman work in uncovering facts and truths about Chernobyl will help the world to make more informed choices about the future of nuclear energy. Airborne plumes of radioactive fission products were distributed into parts of the USSR and other European countries for many days.Two deaths occurred at the facility during the accident, 28 firefighters and other employees died of acute radiation sickness shortly afterward, and fourteen cancer deaths of 134 hospitalized survivors followed in the next ten years. It is estimated that, over the long term, several thousand additional cancer deaths will be attributed to the incident’s byproducts. Billions of dollars will be expended to mitigate the damage that has occurred, both to humans and the environment.Secrecy and falsehoods by the USSR are evident throughout the account. It is also apparent that accidents at nuclear plants occur frequently, most of which are relatively innocuous considering the potential. Because nations will never want to admit being the cause of any worldwide disaster, secrecy will probably continue to accompany nuclear mishaps by any government, a scary thought.Higginbottham’s research is immaculate, his comments and conclusions are well founded, and his writing is impeccable. The NG Readers are great for kids. My 3 year old loves them. I read level 2 to her, and I learn a lot as well! This is one of my favorites from the series. There is so much I never knew about bees.

The best series ever for young readers. It is very hard to find books for young readers that are based on the natural world. The photos are beautiful, the storyline is full of accurate, interesting, scientific facts about the creatures, and has a vocabulary building review at the back of the book. And each book in this series has several upside down jokes that reference the animal, an added point of interest for Montessori and all children. BTW, I have gotten more than 30 of these books for my classroom. Highly recommended!

I think everyone needs to teach their kids about the bees, and how to save them. My husband is a bee keeper so this book was essential for our home library for the kids. Lots of pics and great facts.

Concise, not overly wordy. Teaches younger children a lot about honeybees and the pictures are first rate! A great tool for teaching children the importance of the honey bee. I highly recommend.

I purchased this book for my grandson who is 5. He loves to learn about the insects and birds he sees around him. This book will be easy for him to look at the great photos and for me to read to him as well.

A bit too much for this age of kids unless it's someone who had grown up around bees. Pretty good pictures, could use some more simplification of the more complicated terms
