In the circle of friends I grew up with, being called witty was about the highest praise one could receive. We never bothered to define the term precisely, but rather understood that it implied a degree of cleverness and facility with language that went well beyond just being funny. So, what exactly is wit, how does it work, and why does being considered witty matter so much to us? Those are precisely the questions that James Geary attempts to answer in Wit’s End, his exhaustingly researched and frequently engaging treatise on just about every imaginable aspect of the topic.At the simplest level, the author explains that wit can be regarded as a kind of metaphor: two disparate concepts connected by a commonality in sight, sound, or thought are combined for an incongruously comedic effect. Take puns, for example, such as the title of the 1970s rock album ‘You Can Tune a Piano but You Can’t Tuna Fish’. (Incidentally, this is not one of the dozens of puns that Geary cites, but it has been a personal favorite for a long time now.) The book then expands on this basic theme with chapters detailing how wit can be found in everything from literary fiction to fine art to popular music to religious tracts to political discourse.It deserves mention that the author himself is very clever in how he presents this analysis—the chapter on witty verbal banter is written as the script for a stage play, he offers the section on how wit works on the brain as a scientific research paper, visual wit is treated as an art history lecture, and so on. That structure, along with the thorough way in which the subject is documented across time and tradition, is what I found to be most compelling about Wit’s End. On the other hand, I also caught myself wondering at times in my reading whether this was really too narrow of a topic to justify a volume-length treatment. I am not sure that question was ever resolved, but I did come away from the experience both amused and enlightened.

Fun, unexpected, and at times, dizzying, Wit's End is a clever collection of expressions and explanations of wit. Thematic coherence may not be its strong suit, but for a quick blitz of ideas and thought on the topic it is a good read. It even tackles neuroscience. Although the locus of wit is surely in the brain, its anatomic parsing in this book falls a bit short of shedding light on the concept--but the attempt is appreciated. Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists has a bit more room for the reader than Wit's End, but in both there is something for everyone, and for simple showmanship this wins out.

If you appreciate the clever use of words you'll love this gem. I learned two things.... first, that I may have a good sense of humor but I, alas, am far from being witty. Second, I found out why cannibals don't eat clowns.

The book mixes academic examinations of the subject (neuroscience, psychology, history, etc.) with illuminating examples that range from hilarious to devilishly clever. The puns alone are worth the read. And I particularly enjoyed the examples of jive talk. An enjoyable read that both enlightens and tickles.

I thought it would be wittily written but is ponderously written making the reader dig out humor along with the author’s mainly uninteresting writing! I hoped for fun and got a turpid text I won’t recommend to anyone! Sad.

The review that I read that recommended this book went into great detail of a very minor part of the narrative. Basically this book offers very little insight into "WIT" but a lot into the authors' background; and that is nothing special.

The book was interesting from a historical point of view and I learned some new things about wit. The author really tried to fill out the book and repeated ideas a little too much. Could have been a good article instead.

Creatively written; lots of nice quotable thoughts; mostly an easy read. Touched on the topic of wit with lightness, creativity and brevity, but I was hoping for a bit more insight and/or rigor. But overall, meh.

This book is for S/W engineers or students who want to learn SSL and/or use OpenSSL to integrate SSL into their apps.That OpenSSL book (Network Security with OpenSSL) doesn't work. It cannot even explain OpenSSL APIs well enough, not to mention SSL. I mean, that book tells you to call API foo() first and then bar() next. But it doesn't tell you why. Given so many complicated data structures and APIs involved, you'd be stuck immediately if you want to do something not covered in the book.But this book shows you all the real world details about SSL, and how to implement an SSL library. The structure of those SSL APIs implemented is similar to OpenSSL. Concepts involved are the same. From this book, you can learn how those concepts and algorithms are pieced together. That's why you'll know how to use OpenSSL after reading this book.I find the notes on some SSL history across the book are also very useful. These facts are hard to find, and usually not mentioned in formal documents. It helps you understand why SSL works like this today.Salute to the author !

As a networking professional, I've long known of many SSL and TLS terms and concepts, but had little idea of how these all fit together. This was the perfect book for me.The book does a nice job of laying out each of the capabilities that TLS needs to do its job, explains terms, and gets into the details of how things work. Davies includes it all of the C code to implement TLS, so if the text is ever unclear you can refer to the code to understand exactly what he means. His writing is good enough that I rarely had to do this.If you are interested in cryptographic theory, the math of why an encryption algorithm works the way it does, this is not the book for you. Otherwise, this is an excellent primer and reference on all the key concepts on TLS. I'm hopeful Davies will publish a revised edition when TLS 1.3 is finalized in the next year or two.

I was forced to deal with a TLS system at work (not really my thing) and the book was invaluable in figuring out how things are supposed to work. This is hard stuff and the combination of theory, explanations and code gives you plenty of levels to approach it. This is one of those rare books that should be on your shelf as a reference.

This book explains a very complex topic (SSL) in a clear, step-by-step fashion.As well as examining the cryptographic protocols themselves, the author explains the background reasons and history behind their design. He isn't afraid to get into the complex details, but he always stays focused on what's important: designing and implementing SSL. When explaining elliptic curve cryptography, for example, he briefly summarizes the esoteric maths that underlie it - enough to wet your appetite, if you're interested in that kind of thing - but then concentrates on how to actually implement ECC in code.The author's writing style is friendly, informal and very readable. Even the grammar is near-flawless.The author provides clear, well-thought-out sample code for everything - right there in the book. No having to download code from a broken link!

Amazing, this has what is going on in SSL in simple English, but with the details, not just the names of the algorithms. A gold mine of useful information on how to write the algorithms, as well as sample code in C.Well researched and authoritative. I wish specifications were written this clearly.

An update would be nice, but it's still a painless way to ease into TLS. Of course you'll have to read the RFCs too.

So disappointed, was expecting a textual book 418 on the animal. What I received was a small book, with a small number of photographs, barely 20 pages, suited for young elementary school children

Love this series! The photos are wonderful! The facts are accurate. I would recommend this series to anyone who wanted quick information about the species or an introduction to a species. The book gives enough information to learn about the species there habitat and ther manners. I’d recommend to any age that wanted quick information about a species they are interested In or wanted more information. It is not a boring read, but a life like view into the animal world.

Seems to have good information, but is a thin book and not very robust. It was packaged in a bubble mailer and had been creased which was extremely frustrating given the fact that I ordered it to give as a gift.

Bought this as a gift for a bright eight year old. It was exactly what I was looking for. Beautiful photographs, lots of text, good reading level. I did not read it, so can not vouch for the information in it, but I would buy again for a child's research or fox-loving child's gift.

I bought this for a 6 year old. Lots of interesting facts and great photos. My concern is the full page photo of the fox carrying a dead squirrel in its mouth. True to life but might be a bit too much for a 6 year old to see. Actually I did like seeing that photo. Otherwise the book is great.

A very small book for the price. I was expecting something bigger and more adult oriented.

This book is a quick read with lots of pictures. My eight year old picked it up and read the whole book in about 30 minutes without encouragement. He was very interested in the red fox we see at night when walking the dog. It has lots of pictures and general information.

Great book for kids. My daughter loves foxes and has enjoyed this book immensely.

About the Author

Professor William Steen was, until his retirement in 2000, the Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Liverpool. He started one of the first University-based research schools in laser material processing in the world at Imperial College, London in 1968. Since then he and his group have played a leading role in developing many of the processes discussed in this book, processes that are making the laser a manufacturing tool of great importance. Professor Steen is one of the founder members of the Association of Industrial Laser users (AILU) of which he was the first President. He was also a Director of the Laser Institute of America. Jyoti Mazumder is the Robert H. Lurie Professor of Mechanical Engineering, a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, the Director of the Center for Laser-Aided Intelligent Manufacturing, and the Director for the NSF I/UCRC for Lasers and Plasmas for Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Michigan. He was an early student of Professor Steen’s and obtained his PhD at Imperial College in 1978. Professor Mazumder’s research interests include: transforming the field of materials processing by laser from a technological art to scientifically based-engineering; laser aided manufacturing; atom to application; technical approach including on-line optical diagnostics, transport phenomena modeling, non-equilibrium synthesis of materials with tailored properties, and their evaluation and characterization. He has used earlier editions of this book in his class teaching for many years. He was the author of Laser Processing: Surface Treatment and Film Deposition. Professor Mazumder is a fellow and ex-President of the Laser Institute of America and the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Laser Applications. He has numerous awards and honours to his name. Jyoti Mazumder’s research group operates on funding from TRW (automotive safety systems); Defense Advanced Research Project Agency; National Science Foundation; Office of Naval Research; GE-AEBG; Delphi-Packard; and Ford. Professor Mazumder’s authorial input will ensure that the content of the book continues to represent the most up-to-date knowledge in the field and keeps abreast of teaching trends in the subject.

This is the best material processing book for lasers that I know of. A good starter and reference book. The only other good source of reading that I know of are the LIA publications. Most importantly it describes in a surprisingly clear way the properties of a beam as they relate to processing, and good basic equations for heat transfer.

I will attach a silent, full book video flip-through (as well as a few photos) so you can decide for yourself if this book will work for you.I must admit that my first feelings upon opening this book were of disappointment. I had expected this book to be in the same format as Leila Duly's first book and was surprised and unhappy to see the new format.The first book was printed in large format, single sided and on heavy card stock. This book is printed in a smaller than average format, printed on both sides of the page and the paper is considerably lighter in weight (medium/heavyweight paper rather than card stock.)After getting over both my initial feelings and just myself in general, I looked again at the book and realized that while it was not published as fantastically as the first book, it is still a very well done book compared to most coloring books out there.My only real problem with the book, and the reason I detracted a star, is that many of designs are so scaled down in size to fit the smaller format that it is difficult to color in the tiny spaces. The book is both detailed and intricate in scope, I cannot recommend it to anyone with fine motor or vision issues.While those are not issues for me, finding coloring medium that works with the book requires using ultra-fine, micro-point and extremely sharp nib medium. I choose to use coloring pencils sharpened to a very fine point. I may use my Tombows and other watercolor brushes and markers as well as they did not leak through the page (see below.)The designs are set up as a calendar of sorts of flowers which are in bloom during each month of the year. The names are generally included on the each design and there is a thumbnail listing of the designs (and flowers therein) at the end of the book.I am also in hopes that the publisher, Laurence King Publishing, will come out with an artists edition of this book as they did with Johanna Basford when she was with this publisher. If so, I hope that they concentrate on the two-page spread designs and enlarge them for ease of coloring rather than printing large versions of the single flower designs. Ms. Duly's first book was in the format of an artists edition, so I think there is hope that it will happen.This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing it with my coloring medium.95 flower designs as shown throughout the year. Some of these are elaborate and intricate while others are small designs to fill in a page of quotations.Printed on both sides of the page. There is a mix single page designs and designs that spread across two pagesPaper is heavyweight, ivory color, lightly rough, and non-perforatedSewn binding which can be snipped to release several pages at a time. I prefer to keep my book intact as a calendar of flowers throughout the year.Book is smaller than average (approximately 7 x 9 inches) with a hard back cover and an attached fabric ribbon bookmark.Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page. If you use these, you will have ink seep through and mar the design on the back of the page.Water-based markers, gel pens and India ink pens do not bleed through the page.Colored pencils work well with the slightly rough paper. I was able to blend, layer the same and multiple colors using both oil and wax-based pencils with ease.

What a lovely book with fantastic paper. I can not say enough about the quality of this little book. I love Leila Duly's amazing work. If you are on the fence about this one, I say buy it, you will love it. I also love that several of the pages can be done in one or two sittings.

This is a gorgeous coloring book. The paper is very high quality, beautiful printing. It's a little smaller (not quite B5) and features a nice mix of spreads, single pages, and multiple isolated drawings on the same page. The pages are double-sided, which doesn't bother me, but does annoy some people.People complaining about the size obviously didn't read the description. It's a little smaller than B5 notebook. Put another way, that's bit bigger than most of those over-priced "life planners"The spine IS tight, but that's okay! This book is saddle-stitch bound AND has an adhesive binding. Just crack the spine to loosen the adhesive. Works like a charm and now the pages will lay flat. (Don't go through your library cracking spines to make books lay flat, though. Most books are only perfect--adhesive--bound, and if you crack the spines, you'll loosen the pages.)The artwork is gorgeous, sort of old world and romantic, very similar to Floribunda.

This is the second coloring book I've owned by Leila Duly. First one was fabulous but it was a little intimidating to start coloring the pictures because they were more complicated and I knew I couldn't do it justice. The newest book isn't as large; 7 x 9, pages are not as thick but, still a nice quality of paper and it has a hard cover which makes it easy to color in; wherein you don't need a table to color on. I am really happy with the drawings since I am a gardener and the flowers she drew are pretty much like what you will find on seed packets.

I love the concept and format of this book. I If you like to color flowers just for the sake of coloring flower, it's a dream! In fact I've never encountered a botanical coloring book with quite this many pages. It covers every month of the year with an average of 7 illustrations per month. So that's 84 highly detailed illustrations.. This is a coloring book you can intend to spend a year with, so it makes sense that it would be hard covered, and compact, for durability and ease of travel. It's almost like a keepsake, so I can see why the pages might not be perforated. In other words it is not exactly like Floribunda and that is okay. because there probably is not a rule that all of her books must be exactly the same, Leila's stellar botanical illustrations will work in a variety of formats as long as the paper is quality, and I actually much prefer the smooth texture of the paper in this book versus the heavy card stock. I'm having lots of fun with this book that it probably won't last me a year.

Long awaited book from Leila Duly, it's lovely as her Floribunda. This book is somewhat a bit of a challenge, I'm not sure a inexperienced colorist wouldn't get overwhelmed as I did last year with Floribunda. Now more advanced, I relish the book. Love researching the flowers and saving reference photos to provide reality. I've learned so much from doing the research too. Nice book for sure.

This book was a little smaller than I had thought it would be, but I love it. It's gorgeous in its detail and I love that at the end of the book the artist has listed the flowers on each page if she didn't label them in the drawing. It very much reminds me of the old botanical drawings in some ways, and I appreciate it. Just an all right beautifully done book.The paper is thick and there is a sage green ribbon marker. It is one of my favorite coloring books.
