My 7 yr. old granddaughter, a voracious reader and writer, was thrilled to receive her own dictionary. The thesaurus is very helpful expanding her writing skills. This dictionary will last her a lifetime. I have the same one. I would like to see this available in large type.

I had this same dictionary but I wore it out. I work crossword puzzles every day to keep my mind busy. I don't always know the answers so have to look up in the dictionary. I find it useful when I can't remember a couple of letters in a word. As I get older.....actually I am old...lol....I think....were there two ss's in that word or one so I go look it up in my handy dandy dictionary.

I was so tired of my kids asking me to look up a word on the computer that I finally ordered a dictionary. My only regret is not doing it sooner. In this world where all knowledge is available instantly and right at our finger tips (and coming from who knows where), it's nice to actually sit down and turn real pages to find answers. The thesaurus at the bottom of the pages is a handy resource. I've loved watching my kids take it to their rooms while reading a book so they can look up words they don't know. The computer now gets much needed rest while we turn to the dictionary more and more.

Bought for the local school. The graduates each get a copy as a gift during their last year.

This book is awesome. I love the Thesaurus at the bottom of the page! Wonderful idea. I definitely recommend this. It arrived quickly and properly packaged.

Great combination of both dictionary and thesaurus. Both here are great. I use this one more than any other thesaurus or dictionary. Why should I when I have both in the same book.

Don’t like the font on the book compared to the size of the book. Wish had a large font . Will be returning it to get another book.

My son, of 44 years old has ADHD. His letters to me over the last 25 years have been at 3rd grade level. Even with special ed and etc...his spelling and writting, not to mention understanding similiatries between words, was very poor. He requested a dictionary so, I sent him one. He's in prison and did not have one to use, nor are they allowed to borrow. Very strict rules. Since he got the dictionary, not only has his spelling improved, his writting,structuring the sentences improved, but he now has learned words from the Thesaurus easily, that help him get his point across. Just having to look for the spelling, seeing other words that he has not used before has been exceptional for him. I'm sooo thankful I got this book. He's taking classes for welding and also language and this has deffinately made a difference for him and increased his word power. Thanks again Amazon for making it so easy to get it to him.

Having seen him interviewed in several documentaries on Universal's golden age of horror, I find that David Skal is uniquely situated to write the story Dracula's long journey from novel to film. In doing so, he recounts both the good and bad experienced by the creative team that brought Dracula to the silver screen. In this book you will learn about the creative, if somewhat eccentric filmmaker F.W. Murnau, who made one of the most creative and successful adaptations of Bram Stoker's novel--"Nosferatu"--only to find that he did not have the permission of Bram Stoker's widow, who ordered all prints of the film destroyed. Thankfully, someone thought better and preserved the film for modern audiences (it remains one of the great examples of German expressionism in cinema). You will also learn how two playwrights--one British and one American--collaborated to bring Stoker's novel to the stage, and about the Hungarian actor with only a rudimentary knowledge of the English language who nonetheless donned the famous black cape and cowl on the Broadway stage, and thus made Dracula a household name! Perhaps the most interesting part of Skal's book is his coverage of the making of the 1931 Universal classic, as well as its Spanish counterpart (which many fans claim is the superior film). Here you will learn of disagreements between the creative team over who should play the Transylvanian count, and of Bela Lugosi's torturous journey to bring his stage persona to the big screen. An unskilled writer could render all of this a jumbled mess, but Skal makes it all not just coherent, but fascinating.This is an excellent read for anyone interested in Golden Age Hollywood, and should be sought out by students of Horror Cinema, because we came close to not getting the 1931 "Dracula"; had we not, the introduction of the genre could have been profoundly different, had it happened at all.

I first heard of David Skal from the Universal Classic Monster series of DVD's. David was on the accompanying documentary and did the audio commentary for Tod Browning's 1931 classic, Dracula. If you own the set and have run the documentary and, particularly, the commentary, then you've already experienced about three chapters of this book. What remains is a rich mine of details about every aspect of Dracula, the book, movies, and culture. And what a lot there is.David's writing, like his speech, is precise, educated, and loaded with literary allusions. While no dilettante, I consider myself well read and was still left with the occasional "what the hell is he talking about?" moment. The language is rich and occasionally reminds me of the mental images drawn by Anne Rice at the height of her powers. However, David is no snob and is not merely parading his impressive intellect - it's just that he knows so darn much about the subject.And if I had any criticism of the book that would be it - David seems driven to exhaustively document every possible aspect of Dracula's existence. The detailed (and seemingly never ending) battles between Florence Stoker and the makers of "Nosferatu" is described in such detail that I wanted to scream "OKAY!! We get it! Nosferatu was a Dracula rip off and Flo didn't like it!!" But eventually the tale moves on and sets the stage for intricate negotiations between the Stoker estate and Universal. In retrospect (and considering how handsomely the studio profited) it's interesting to see that Universal bought almost unlimited use of the vampire for the paltry sum of $25,000.00 and is still making oodles of money hand over fist today. David covers all aspects of vampire lore from Byron's "The Giaour" (1813) to Mel Brooks' "Dracula, Dead and Loving It" (1995). And everything in between. Trust me, if it can be construed to be in any way connected with Dracula, it's in this book.If you have any interest in gothic culture, or the movies that spawned it, this is a must have. Reading it is like enjoying an evening of conversation with a much beloved, if slightly eccentric, old friend, preferably over brandy in front of a glowing fireplace on a cold, cold night.

Indian law professor and scholar Charles Wilkinson has written an accessible and poignant book about a noteworthy Native American that all Americans should get to know. Billy Frank Jr. (Nisqually) has dedicated his life to protecting of the habitat, natural resources, and way of life for Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest.At age fourteen, he was arrested by Washington state wildlife wardens for fishing in the Nisqually watershed. During the 1960s, African American civil rights "sit-ins" inspired Native American "fish-ins." This focused national attention on Frank's Landing as a key battleground for Indian demands that the federal government uphold treaty rights to end a century of Washington state interference that jeopardized tribal survival and sovereignty.This struggle created a new level of awareness about Indian fishing rights in the United States. Billy Frank's forebearer Chief Leschi insisted that the 1854 Medicine Creek Treaty secure the reserved "right of taking fish, at all usual and accustomed grounds and stations ... in common with all citizens of the Territory."This treaty provision was violated by the state of Washington until in 1974 federal judge George Boldt ruled that "in common" meant that Indian fishers were entitled to half the harvestable catch of salmon. Despite the resistance to this decision by state officials and commercial fishing interests, the end result has been cooperation between federal, state, and tribal governments over fisheries co-management since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Boldt decision in 1979.Billy Frank, Jr. galvanized and sustained Native American efforts that produced the most significant Indian rights case of the twentieth century. He is now the chairman of the North¬west Indian Fisheries Commission fighting to restore the environment and natural resources of the western Washington treaty tribes. In 2004, Indian Country Today newspaper presented him with its Inaugural American Indian Visionary Award.Wilkinson tells Billy's story in a circular Native American style that is a welcome respite from textbooks or linear accounts of American Indian history. This book is suitable for high school students, the general reading public, and college under-graduates, and a "must read" if you live in the Pacific Northwest.Sadly, Billy Frank passed away this year (2014). I look forward to a biography about him by a scholar like Charles Wilkinson.

The story told in Messages from Franks Landing is an excellent example of the kinds of experiences the natives of the Pacific Northwest have gone through. This book is well worth the read and has a high content of interview data about the Nisqually battle for fishing rights and the rights to care for the land. The story of Billy Frank Jr. is one of victory over oppression. The accounting is presented in an easy to read, interesting manner.

An outstanding history of the treatment of the northwest native tribes following the Medicine Creek Treaty. Poor treatment by the government through the years following the treaties, and justice served by the Bolt decision, but too much damage done by overfishing (not by native American) and degradation of habitat and problems with fish passage caused by dams, roads and other barriers. We need to do better.

This was the first graphic novel I've read. I have no idea why I waited so long!Maggie has a lot going on in her life. Her mother, who has home-schooled Maggie up until this point, has left the family. She's starting high-school with no prior experience, and really no other friends besides her three older brothers. Add to that, she's being haunted by a very sad ghost for reasons unknown. Maggie is really overwhelmed trying to make her way in school. Just figuring out who she's going to eat lunch with, makes her completely nervous. Understandably so, all of us remember the awkwardness of high-school, even with established friends! Maggie ends up befriended by Alistair and Lucy, brother and sister, who are sort of outcasts in school. They look and dress different: Mohawk, piercing, but very sweet. Maggie's oldest brother, Daniel, warns her off of Alistair, apparently he has a past with him. Alistair used to be part of the popular crowd which gave anyone who was different a hard time. But that's in the past, and there's a story behind why he's no longer in that crowd. The story touched my heart, and Maggie's too.Maggie, the main character was super cute. She's a tomboy who had me at scary movie fan. Who doesn't love a girl that loves the movie Alien? I love her excited quote about Ripley: "I mean, she drives a spaceship and uses a flamethrower and kills the alien in the end-" Aliens is one of my all-time favorite movies. I love it when Ripley gets into that cargo mover and says, "Get away from her, you B%*&#!" Sorry, didn't mean to get sidetracked, but Maggie is my type of girl! I also loved the family dynamic, and her relationship with her brothers; all those boys, so protective of her. The twins were a crack-up, always killing each other but under all that you could see their affection. Like I said before, this was the first graphic novel I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I really liked it; so much comes across with very few words. The pictures convey a lot of the emotion. I was hoping there would be a sequel to this story but I guess this is a stand-alone, which is a little disappointing because there were some questions unanswered. I guess it's better to be left wanting a little more than wishing it was over, right? Anyways, I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend to fans of this genre or anyone looking for a cute story.

I bought a copy for myself and an extra for a friend after reading this as a library book. This is a well-written YA manga that has a girl main character and great depictions of youthful angst, high school politics, and the relationships between sisters and brothers and daughters and parents.

I bought this for my wife but I read it before she did and loved it. Great fun, even with all the high school shenanigans (I'm definitely not the target audience for most YA) and I'd definitely recommend this as a good read. Looking forward to seeing more of this artist/writer's work in the future.

I love the books by Faith. This is fascinating as a developmental work. Totally worth watching her grow.

This was recommended to me by an adult, but it's not a book for adults. It's made more for kids in middle school. It's a cute story, though.

Read this text for an education course and fell in love with it. Its story is interesting and open to multiple interpretations, and its illustrations are excellent. I only wanted more.
