My son is a missionary in Estonia and does deep sea diving so I was very interested when I got the notice from Amazon about this book. I ask him if he knew about the ship and he said he knew a few things about it but would love to have the book.I ordered the book and when it came I looked at the way it was written and thought maybe I would read it before I sent it to him. I am very glad I did - it is written so well I could hardly put it down after I started reading it. I would advise anyone who has any interest in ship wrecks or just a good read to buy it. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. A very well written book and it was almost like I was right there in the water with those people.

This is a mournful but gripping story--reminiscent of stories of the sinking of the Titanic, but everything happened so much faster. Mr. Nelson does a fine job of recreating the tempestuous cold of the sea that night. His narrative deals primarily with the experiences and recollections of the survivors, and the first-person accounts are deeply memorable. Well done.

The tragic story of the sinking of the Estonia in 1994 and the loss of over 800 lives is brought vividly to life in Flashes in the Night.Author Nelson has interviewed and managed to perfectly capture the harrowing tales of a number of survivors. One feels their pain and terror from the moment the ship tilts to almost a 45degree angle, their struggle to get up to deck seven and onto the open deck (almost impossible on vertical stairs) and then to be subjected to near freezing conditions in the rain and ocean. Waiting and drifting for hours in open rafts waiting for rescue.How anyone managed to live through the scale of this disaster is amazing. Its also a fitting tribute to those who perished.This has to be one of the best books written about tragedy at sea and is comparable to Walter Lords classic A Night to Remember as here are the stories of the people told moment by moment.The book ends with a chapter on the conspiracy theories and recent revelations.Highly recommended.

This was a well-researched book and was written fairly well too. I don't know if the copy I got had just been released or perhaps just hadn't been edited, but there were lots of errors in it, so much that it distracted from the book. I am hoping those were cleaned up. If so, it would definitely get at least another star from me. It bogs down a bit in the middle and toward the end, in my opinion. I do not fault the author for that however, as this is a historical account and there is only so much you can do with the facts to make it more interesting.

Wow - the way Jack Nelson presents these true stories is just phenomenal! I could not put this compelling read down, and was really able to get a sense of the experience that these people had on their sea journey. I highly recommend this fascinating and intense book.

A riveting, moment-by-moment story of the tragedy that feels like a small-scale Titanic sinking. Unimaginable to have survived such a death-in-your-face saga, but the survivors must live on. Very gripping.

Well, I read this book out of curiosity and because I wanted to learn more about doodling.In general, I would say this is a well written entertaining and helpful finding for those who are interested in art and in "zendoodling" in particular. The book has some strong and weak parts. I tried to make a fair review of them all. Here we go.PROS+ Lessons start right after the introduction. The book has basic patterns, step by step instructions, guidelines and shading. There is no need to get twenty books for the same information. Massive value for the contents. So you don't need a series of other books.+ I love some illustrations, especially animals like a lion or an owl. They are really cute. One day I will draw a better one lol.+ Good for beginners and intermediate level. I found the simple patterns really easy to reproduce. Step by step guidances are easy to repeat and well described.+ Advanced drawing. Once you are good enough (not my case yet, but still) - expert level patterns, optics illusions and shadowing look pretty neat, which usually many books don't show. Moreover, while reading even beginners can try and actually draw some really outstanding pics.+ It is not just a book about seeing and doodling, it is a book about our MENTAL HEALTH. It tells how to get rid of the stress and relax while you draw something. Authors give a lot of advises how to start your first doodle project , how to express yourself, how to relax and get advantages and satisfaction from drawing.+ I love the MAIN RULE of this book - You can draw anything and in the end it doesn't matter what your drawing looks like-or doesn't look like! What's important is the act of drawing itself. Opening your eyes and your heart to the world around you is the main idea of this book, as I see it.+ Despite the fact that nowadays many books push you to buy something or attend their courses, this book helps you to open up certain avenues of your soul, express yourself through doodling and be more creative, without any hidden advertising.+ Inspiration gallery is really fun. My favorite is a small girl's picture, I can't imagine that she is so young to draw like this.CONS- I am not sure if there are any colored pictures. There could be something, although many Kindles are black and white.- There is no option to buy a printed version of this book. That’s disappointing. I would buy one for my mom, as she doesn’t feel comfortable with electronic devices.- Sometimes it's too much theory and discussions about what is doodling and what is not. Frankly, I skipped some chunks of text. But this is my point.Concluding, this is a solid book teaching exactly what I was looking for. For all folks who are in doodle art I would recommend it with no doubt.Thank you.

I used to like drawing and coloring when I was a kid and only recently found out that there are coloring books for adults. This is my first book and I absolutely love it.The authors really thought it through. It is broken down into 4 difficulty levels meaning it is good for any person with any skills in drawing. The book is clearly written and well organized. The illustrations are self-explanatory. There is a big number of patterns/tangles described in each chapter dedicated to a certain level of expertise and also includes explanations on shading and creating 3-D effects. I started slowly from the very beginning and learned some easy patterns and then moved to more advanced. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. I could not believe my eyes! In a matter of days I was able to draw an elephant and a lion keeping correct proportions and then filling the drawings with patterns, tangles and doodles I picked up from the book. I am totally hooked as drawing now during a break at work and in the evening when watching TV or before going to bed.If you are starting out this is a book I recommend!

This has been one of my favorite coloring books by far I love the designs. Each page is complex but easy enough to complete in one sitting. I have nearly completed the book and will buy some of the other books in this series. One thing about this book is the paper is really nice with a smooth texture that takes ink really smoothly with full coverage without requiring going over multiple times. The pages are perforated so they can be removed and used as journal pages or framed. I use markers and unfortunately they bleed through the page so the reverse of the page is dotted up with bleed-through but there isn't much help for that. Also, the designs are all different but have similar design elements from page to page so the lack of variety in the details might not appeal to some, Otherwise I love the book myself and highly recommend it. I used a wide variety of pens - sharpies, color pencils and gel pens.

Who would have thought that my little doodles could really turn into a something besides a post it note scribble. I still don't think they can but this book tries to teach me they can. Doodle Art Handbook is a book that starts with introducing what doodling is and lets us know that there are different types of doodling. It walks you step by step through the multiple techniques to create a larger piece of art. I didn't know there were different levels all the way up to expert. Expert to me looks like a coloring page or something but not doodles. Either way the book was interesting and I learned something new. If you are thinking about learning how to turn your post it note desk art into something beautiful this might be the book for you..maybe. I still haven't mastered doodling but maybe you can!

I have great trouble taking time off and relaxing, because I see any time that I'm not working as wasted time. My blood pressure testifies to this. I have read numerous translations of the classic Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu over the years, but this text translated by D.C. Lau is one of the very best I have read. Lao Tzu is considered the founder of “Taoism” and lived in about the same time frame as Confucius. There is an excellent introduction written by D.C. Lau which provides some insight into China at the time Lao Tzu taught his Taoist philosophy.This 192 page paperback book is organized as follows: Lao Tzu book one and book two. List of passages for comparison, and in the appendices it covers the problem of authorship and the nature of the work. There is also a chronological table and an excellent glossary section.This is book is not an easy read; however, it is a volume that should be studied in sections to obtain the most benefit from this text. Nevertheless, this is a classic in philosophical literature and should be read by anyone who desires to be educated in Asian Taoism. The parables are sometimes like philosophical puzzles which force you to think more deeply on the subject matter. As someone who has been involved in the Asian martial and other classical arts most of mylife, I found this book a very interesting read.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives.It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. A driven entrepreneurial type who is looking more or straightforward advice on building your business, achieving goals and finding ‘success’, then I encourage you more-so than anyone else to pick this book up.It has helped me make difficult business decisions, cut through the unimportant details and roadblocks, optimize my time, and improve my relations with my clients and really everyone else in my life for that matter. As with so many books, we endure the scholarly and erudite reviewers who claim to know which text and translation is the most recondite, the most accurate, the most true to the original. I don't know about all that. I know Lao Tsu was so important to Asian culture and life, and I know this book makes me feel whole again with each reading. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

These puzzles are a little more difficult than I expected right from the first one. They start out as moderate and get more difficult as you proceed through the book, For me that is just what I like, but for a beginner they would be too difficult. The paper is good quality so that it does not tear when you erase notes, and there is plenty of room for your notes in the squares.

Love the large print and quality paper. HOWEVER, the spiral is covered by the front and back covers connecting over it. This means that if you fold the pages you have already done back, the book does not lie perfectly flat. I fixed that by cutting the covering up the center and trimming both edges to within 1/8" of the spiral spine.

This is a wonderful selection of puzzles in a large format. I purchased this book for my mother who is legally blind with macular degeneration. This book and others in it's series are the perfect size and boldness for her to make out. Wonderful!

My eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be - with Patrick Blindauer's Large Print Sudoku series, I can continue with my favorite relaxation activity.

A little hard to hold onto, but love this large print version. I can see the puzzles so much better.

I've gotten two of these series and gifted my sister-in-law with a third. They're great for traveling in that they can fill the time one has to kill without requiring internet access or headphones. Plus, they offer intellectual stimulation that one doesn't get as a passive video viewer.The large print is handy for those of us who often require eyeglasses to comfortably read. Adult entertainment.

I have a problem with the small puzzle books but this is great, I don't need special glasses. They are hard to solve and I love it. I save the easy ones for my neighbors. I like the paper weight as I hate those cheap drug store brands. Also nice is the spiral, easy to handle. I can't imagine anyone not 'loving' this book. Jolie in Mpls

My Mother has macular and loves doing Sudokus. This print is large enough that she has no trouble seeing them!! This is her third book and she loves them!
